On The Surface is an American rock band formed in 2001 in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. The band is composed of lead vocalist and bassist Anthony Brodeur, lead vocalist and keyboardist Heather Fogarty, guitarist Bill Knaus, and drummer Matthew Amdur.
History
On The Surface formed in 2001 when the members were students in high school. The band’s original name was Incident 14 and they soon began playing at venues throughout New England. Their first concert was playing at WAAF’s Locobazooka at Green Hill Park in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2001. Soon after, they won a battle of the bands competition where they were chosen to be the opening act for pop band Blessid Union of Souls.
They released their debut album Devil In Disguise in 2001 and began playing weekly in music venues and bars, although they could only enter the venues to perform since they were still teenagers at the time.
They released their sophomore album Spunk Rock Revolution in 2002.
Once the band graduated high school and started college, they decided to change their name to On The Surface as they embraced a more mature sound. They began to receive more recognition throughout New England and opened for bands such as Plain White T’s, Switchfoot, Simple Plan, Yellowcard, Piebald (band), Mae, and The Format.[2][3]
In 2004 they were named “Best Pop Act” by Worcester Magazine.
On The Surface released their third studio album in 2006 entitled The Fall.[4]
The band relocated to Los Angeles, California in 2006 and began recording new material. They played frequently at venues such as Troubadour (West Hollywood, California), The Viper Room, and The Key Club. They joined the Vans Warped Tour in 2008.[5]
In 2009, they signed with Japanese Record label Spinning Inc. and released their fourth album, Waiting for the Storm. Their songs “The Very Best of Me” and “Let in the Light” were both featured on MTV’s The Hills (TV series).[6]
The band took a hiatus in 2011 to focus on other projects. In 2021, they reunited and began working on their fifth studio album to mark their 20 year anniversary as a band.
