One&Only Palmilla was opened in 1956 by Don Abelardo “Rod” Rodriguez, who was the Mexican President’s son. It had 15 rooms at the time. The original resort hosted stars such as Lucille Ball and John Wayne.
Renovations/Rebrand
Kerzner International purchased the property in 2002, gave the property a $90 million renovation in 2004 and rebranded it as One&Only Palmilla. Another renovation took place in 2014 to repair damage from Hurricane Odile and add two Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurants: SEARED and Suviche. The outdoor furniture and interiors of both restaurants were designed by Jeffrey Beers International. It reopened on April 20, 2015. The property now has 174 guestrooms, all of which are oceanfront, as well as two villas. One&Only Palmilla was deemed “The Best Resort In Mexico” by Forbes.[1] The COVID-19 Pandemic closed the resort briefly, with it opening back up in November 2020[2]
