Oopus, stylized as OOPUS (Estonian reference to Latin word opus meaning "work") is a folktronica band from Estonia created in 2017. Its members fuse together old Estonian runo songs, analog acid synths and movement triggered lights and visuals. Their goal is to take traditional music to the club scene and make it relevant for contemporary audiences. Oopus has four members: two musicians and founders Mari Meentalo (Estonian bagpipes, flutes and whistles, mouth harp, vocals and loopers) and Johannes Ahun (analog synthesizers and sound engineer), light installation artist and VJ Aleksander Sprohgis, and dancer Raho Aadla. The band also works closely with photographer-illustrator Kerttu Kruusla.

History

Oopus' founding members Mari Meentalo and Johannes Ahun met and started the band while studying at University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy. Meentalo has a background in Estonian traditional music and Ahun in sound engineering. Ahun and Meentalo met Sprohgis in summer 2017 and invited him to join the group. Their first show together as a group of three was at Viljandi Traditional Music Centre on the 10th of November in 2017 at St. Martin's Day which is an important Estonian traditional holiday dedicated to male ancestral spirits. The band's first release was a single "Hingesandid" (Soul Mummers) inspired by that holiday and also by old traditional songs related to the topic.[1]

Oopus has released two studio albums Nõidus (Sorcery) in 2018 and Folk On Acid in 2022, one live impro audiovisual album Inventing Lunar Cycle in 2022, and several singles and remixes.[2] The band created its own studio at Põhjala Culture Factory[3] in 2020 and have been curating Folktronica Showcase at Tallinn Music Week since 2020.[4]

The band has performed at Burning Man (USA), Nordischer Klang (GER), Viljandi Folk Music Festival (EST), Linecheck (ITA), I Land Sound (EST), Kometa Festivals (LAT), Tribalanga (POL), Loftas Fest (LIT) and many more.[5]

Mari Meentalo, singer and bagpipe player in Oopus, is participating in Keychange global network 2022. Oopus is an active member of Estonia’s music export office Music Estonia. Oopus was awarded with Raadio 2 special prize at Estonian traditional music awards Etnokulp 2022.[6]
