OpenBioMaps is an open and free biological database service. This service is based on the idea to create maintainable public services for scientific and conservation databases[1][2]. The OpenBioMaps uses open-source software components to store, visualize and publish scientific and conservation related data. The OpenBioMaps consortium is a collaboration of institutes to keep running these public services. The OpenBioMaps web application was originally developed with support of DANUBEPARKS - Network Of Protected Areas project to visualize public data of three national parks in this project[3][4]. From 2014 the Milvus Group joined the development. They created the OpenBirdMaps database[5] using the OpenBioMaps.
OpenBioMaps Idea
The OpenBioMap is based on the "maintainable source use" idea[1] which means: there is no central budget, no central institutes and no employees. The servers and the maintenance work hours are contributions from those institutes which use the OpenBioMaps and share the extra capacity of their servers.
OpenBioMaps Softwares
Free and open-source application suite for data management, especially for creating biological databases and managing biological data.
The OpenBioMaps database framework uses open-source softwares: PostgreSQL, PostGIS, MapServer, OpenLayers, Apache webserver, Debian Linux
The web applications are written in: PHP and JavaScript.
The additional software components are written in several languages: R, Perl, bash, JAVA[6]
Public Services
- Creating and managing custom databases[2]
- Easy data import from various formats (xls, gpx, shp, csv ...)
- Repeatable and citable queries[7]
- DataCite DOI[7]
- Exporting data into various formats (csv, gpx)
- Accessing data from remote databases or desktop applications (e.g. R, QGIS)
- Decentralized community
- Customizable data management interfaces
- Customizable data collecting interfaces
OpenBioMaps Consortium
The OpenBioMaps Consortium is an official agreement of institutes to keep running the OpenBioMaps public services. It was signed on 1 September 2015 by University of Debrecen, Eötvös Lóránd University, Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate, World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) Hungary. In 2016 other institutes joined: Eszterházy Károly University, Milvus Group
