OpenPhone is the name of the company and the corresponding smartphone application that provides Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services aimed at small and medium-sized businesses.[1] OpenPhone was founded in 2018 by Mahyar Raissi and Daryna Kulya.[2] The company is based in San Francisco, California.[3]

Company[edit]

Beginning[edit]

OpenPhone project was launched in 2018 by Mahyar Raissi and Daryna Kulya.[4]  [5][6] Prior to founding OpenPhone, Mahyar worked in product development at Joist startup, a software company, while Daryna was a Product Manager at Vidyard, a video-marketing software company. [2] Mahyar realized that his clients often use their personal phone numbers for business transactions. The commercialization of the concept to separate personal and business phone numbers led to a startup creation.[7]

Funding[edit]

In January 2020, the company raised $2 million in seed funding to enhance the app's features. The funding came from Slow Ventures, Y Combinator, Kindred Ventures, Garage Capital, 122 West Ventures, and others.[1] Some of that funding was also used to increase the company's workforce.[5] The company reportedly tripled its user base following this seed funding. [4]

OpenPhone next raised another $14 million in a Series A funding round in November 2020.[4][8] The funding round was led by Craft Ventures, with participation from Slow Ventures, Kindred Ventures, Y Combinator, Garage Capital and Chapter One Ventures.[8] The funding went toward hiring for various positions in the company and marketing.[6]

In April 2022, OpenPhone received $40 million in Series B funding, led by Tiger Global, with participation from Craft Ventures, Slow Ventures, Garage Capital and Worklife Ventures. The company intended to invest in further expanding the app's communication and collaboration features and building deeper integration with other apps.[3]

Business Model[edit]

OpenPhone provides business communication to small and medium-sized enterprises[1][9] by supplying a business contact number and related phone services through the company's smartphone app. The app is available for Android, iOS[2] and desktop web interface.[9] The model is based on a monthly subscription.[3]

Technology[edit]

OpenPhone uses Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which routes calls and texts over the internet. The OpenPhone application enables users to use a second phone number for business purposes. Subscribers can choose a local or toll-free number in the United States or Canada. The app can also be used to port an existing phone number.[7]

The OpenPhone app was launched in Apple's App Store in January 2018; it became available for Android devices in June of the same year.[2] With the business number and app, subscribers can make or receive calls and use text messaging and voicemail, and set their availability or business hours.[7] Enhancements in 2018 allowed users to opt for call forwarding and voicemail-to-text transcriptions.[2]

In January 2020, OpenPhone enabled integration with other productivity apps such as Slack.[5][9] The company also started to add collaborative features to the app such as allowing multiple users to share a phone number.[1] Additional updates in November 2020 included OpenPhone's integration with other customer relationship management (CRM) apps such as HubSpot and Zapier,[6][8] as well as a built-in address book, email integration, and the ability to record calls and send pre-written replies to texts or missed calls.[4] OpenPhone also introduced international calling options, group messaging, search functionality and usage analytics.[1]

As of April 2022, OpenPhone can be integrated with another CRM in Salesforce, while the company is working on compatibility with Zendesk and others. [3]
