VOOC Flash Charger[edit]
The VOOC flash charging system, which is called “Voltage Open Loop Multi-Step Constant-Current Charging”, is fast-charge technology developed by OPPO[1] Electronics, and has already applied for 18 patents. As presented, “charge for 5 minutes, talk for 2 hours.” Also from the official report, it is able to charge certain OPPO devices from 0 to 75% in just 30 minutes.
Introduction[edit]
The VOOC flash charging was first equipped onto OPPO’s former smartphone model “Find 7[2]”, which was applied a 3000mAh lithium battery. Form experiments, the flash charge showed us that only 30 minutes, it charged the phone with 75% power, which is about 4 times fast as the normal smartphone chargers.
VOOC flash charging system, however, requires customized set of adapter and battery to help it work properly, which includes OPPO customized special adapter, battery, data cable, circuitry, interfaces. OPPO also first installed MCU intelligent chip in the adapter to better adjust voltage goes through the cable and smartphone.
Released Time[edit]
- Version 1.0: On March 19th 2014, OPPO first released VOOC flash charging system and applied it on the OPPO “Find 7” while most other competitors were still using 5V1A charging modes. It changed normal circuit topology, lowered smartphone charging temperature, and created a “Five Layers of Protection” to make the whole charging process extremely safe.
- Version 1.1: After a half year, OPPO released its VOOC Power Bank[3] and VOOC Car Charger with the same high charging speed as previous. Except this, it also developed the former adapter to a VOOC mini adapter[4], which is only a half volume of the previous one.
- Super VOOC[5]: On February 23rd 2016, OPPO announced a new Super VOOC charging, which will be used for future OPPO headsets. The Super VOOC is able to charge a 2500 mAh battery in just 15 minutes[6], and also achieve about 45% of charge in 5 minutes.
Five Layers of Protection[edit]
VOOC first established the called “Five Layers of Protection” to keep the charging process safe, and they are explained as:
- The Voltage Tester built into the adapter makes the adapter to test and interact with the current and voltage continuously, and be able to cut the current when it goes up to a specific point.
- The VOOC Identification built into the adapter can identify if the device is supported with the flash charging technology. If not, the charging process will go as a normal charger.
- The VOOC Identification built into the phone will constantly control the third MOSFET to protect the process as the third back line.
- The Voltage Tester built into the battery will test and adjust the current and voltage going into the battery, and immediately cut the current off when it goes up to a dangerous point.
- The Fuse built into the battery can immediately melt when the current goes high, and physically stops and protect the charging process.
Principle[edit]
The basic principle of a smartphone charging system is simple. The charger puts energy back into the battery. The rate at which that energy is supplied to the battery is measured in watts. The higher the power supplied, the faster the battery charges.
Power is measured as P = V × I: The multiplication of voltage and current. For example, a charger running at 5V and 2A generates 10 Watts in power.
Therefore, in order to increase the power of charging process, manufacturer usually choose to either increase the charging voltage or current. One of the key differences between VOOC and other quick charging systems is that VOOC uses higher levels of current, whereas the others use higher voltages (a normal fast charger using 9V and 1.67A creates 15W). So instead of 9V and 1.67A to give 15W in power, VOOC uses 5V and 4A to give 20W[8].
