The Orchid Conservation Alliance (OCA) is a US-based nonprofit environmental organization focused on the purchase and protection of tropical lands to strategically conserve threatened orchid species. The OCA supports the purchase of tracts of land by local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in a fashion similar to the Nature Conservancy by making use of land trusts. The organization also seeks to help in-situ conservation measures by providing training, capital and equipment for environmental stewardship in economically impoverished areas. Efforts so far have been based in South America.
The OCA was founded in 2006 by Peter Tobias, Ron Kaufmann, and Steve Beckendorf.[1][2] Tobias and Kaufmann had significant experience through their work with the San Diego County Orchid Society's Conservation Committee.[3] In 2013 Mary Gerritsen was added to the board of directors. Roberta Fox joined in 2020. As of August 2021, the OCA has a mailing list of about 525 members and 44 affiliated orchid societies.
Influence and Funding[edit]
Since its inception the OCA has raised nearly $500,000 to support the creation or expansion of seven orchid reserves and preserved nearly 3,000 acres (12 km2) acres of pristine, primary biodiverse orchid-rich habitats.[4] Most land is permanently protected for an average of less than $300 per acre.
Education about habitat conservation is given via orchid society presentations. These presentations are the OCA's main source of funding as is membership in the organization.[5][6] A donation is included in each of the OCA's small group tours to orchid-rich areas around the world.[7] In 2020 the OCA spent 91% of the funds received directly on conservation work. The board members and staff are volunteers and receive no salaries or financial benefits.
Awards[edit]
2018 - The Ernest Hetherington Orchid Digest Medal of Honor.[8] To Peter Tobias, Director and Board President of the Orchid Conservation Alliance for his leadership in the field of orchid conservation.
