Oriyomi Abdulrahman Hamzat is an investigative broadcast journalist, human rights activist, and chairman of Agidigbo 88.7 FM.[1]

Background and Education[edit]

Oriyomi hails from Ibadan, in Oyo state. He was born to Asimiyu Adekunle Hamzat, a journalist at the Nigerian Television Authority. Oriyomi Hamzat completed his high school education at the Iroko Community Grammar School before going to the well-known Oyo State School of Sciences, Pade.

Oriyomi Hamzat traversed several academic fields in his quest for tertiary education. He holds a Diploma in Geology at The Polytechnic, Ibadan. He further explored Mass Communication at the institution’s Eruwa Campus (now known as Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa). In November 2023, he bagged a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics and Language Arts at the University of Ibadan.[2] [3]

Career[edit]

Hamzat’s passion for media and communications led to his sojourn as a print journalist at The Guardian (Nigeria), before he switched to Broadcast Journalism.

Hamzat worked as a broadcaster at the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State [BCOS], Ile Akede, Ibadan. He has since worked with other reputable broadcast media stations such as the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Amuludun FM, Raypower FM, Petals FM, and 32 FM 94.9 before floating his radio station, Agidigbo 88.7 FM.

Driven by a lifelong commitment to human rights, Oriyomi Hamzat has established himself as a powerful voice for the oppressed. Throughout his broadcasting career, Hamzat has championed the cause of those who are marginalized and silenced. He offers a platform for the voiceless to express their grievances.[4][5]

He sheds light on societal ills and exposes wrongdoing, regardless of its source. His recent intervention in the case of Timothy Adegoke, a student whose death under questionable circumstances sparked outrage, exemplifies his unwavering pursuit of justice.[6] [7] [8] [9]

Hamzat's path has not been without its challenges.[10] [11] His unwavering pursuit of truth has often placed him at odds with the powerful. In 2017, he faced arrest by the Department of State Security on trumped-up charges, an attempt to silence his criticism of government maltreatment of civil servants.[12] [13] This incident, however, only strengthens his resolve to fight for a more just and equitable society.[14]

Awards and Recognition[edit]

Hamzat has received several awards. Among these awards are:

  • Honorary Doctorate in Art and Communications [D.Art, Honoris Causa] by the Panama-based European-American University (April 2023).[15]
  • International Humanitarian Service Award (Sept. 2023)[16] [17]

Media House[edit]

Hamzat owns a network of radio stations and television across southwestern Nigeria called Agidigbo FM and Agidigbo TV. In 2021, the Ibadan arm of the radio network was established and licensed by the National Broadcasting Commission.[18]
