Osmar Pinto Junior is a Brazilian scientist and writer, specializing in the study of storms and lightning. He was the first South American scientist to belong to the International Conference on Atmospheric Electricity (ICAE).[1][2][3][4][5]
Biography
Born in Porto Alegre (RS), he graduated in Electronic Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (1977), and soon after moved to São José dos Campos (SP) to study for a master's degree at the National Institute for Space Research[6][7] (INPE), completing it in 1979, while also conducting studies and research in the area of atmospheric electricity (lightning). This work formed the basis for what would become the first lightning research group created in Brazil (ELAT Group) in 1995. In 2010, he received the "Faz a Diferença[8][9]" award from the newspaper O Globo, in the Science / History category, for contributing with his work and research to making Brazil a better country.
