PBM is an American rock band based out of Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1997 by lead singer Nate Castle and trumpet player Tom Torrento, PBM (Poor Boy Music) has released two full-length albums - Overview (2003) and One Sip at a Time (2006).
Between 2003-2007, PBM performed more than 500 shows nationwide and traveled approximately 250,000 road miles on their tour bus, aptly named "The Beast."
PBM has shared the stage with prominent musicians including The Recycled, Gavin DeGraw, The Presidents of the United States of America, Blessed Onion of Souls, The Verve Pipe, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Paul Rodgers (of Bad Company), and Tommy James and the Shondells, That Mustache Feeling, among others.
They have focused much of their energy developing a grassroots style fan-base of college students and indie-music fans, and have been showcase performers at APCA and NACA conferences.
History[edit]
Early years and Formation (1996-2000)[edit]
In 2003, PBM traveled to Austin, Texas to perform at the annual South By Southwest festival. The band performed to a sold out crowd at The Whiskey Lounge along with a stable of well-established Detroit music acts, including The Deadstring Brothers, Gold Cash Gold and the rapper Tripp. In attendance were representatives from the UK based record label, Raw Fish Records.
In 2003, the band traveled to England for a 2-week tour, performing in several cities. The band was invited by independent UK record label, Raw Fish Records. While on tour, PBM recorded a 5-song sampler called The Manchester Sessions at Manchester College. The band also performed at the In The City Festival, a major music festival. They showcased for major and independent labels and drew rave reviews.
Overview and One Sip At A Time (2001-2007)[edit]
PBM released their last album to more than 2,500 people at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in Royal Oak, Michigan. The album, One Sip At A Time was distributed nationally to major retail stores by Red Eye Distribution. It is still available through Amazon.com and other retail websites or through the band at performances.
PBM appeared on the June 28, 2006 episode of NBC's America's Got Talent. Piers Morgan voted against bringing the band back, while both Brandy and David Hasselhoff gave 'yes' votes to advance PBM to the next round. On the July 19 episode, PBM was not asked to perform in the semifinal round; they were thus eliminated from the competition.
After a successful UK tour, PBM appeared at NACA Nationals as an unsigned artist. Eventually they were signed to Degy Booking International. PBM performed at hundreds of college campus across the country, traveling over 250,000 miles via rental cars, tour bus and planes.
Reformation and In Sleep (2009-2013)[edit]
On February 13, 2009 PBM reunited with former members and new members for a sold out show at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, Michigan. Those scheduled to appear include Nate Castle, Tom Torrento, Jeremiah Hoehner, Dave Jakubowski, Dave Krogh, Steve Zdanio, Gerry Castle and newcomer Matt Marion. The show will mark a new chapter for the group.
During the PBM hiatus many side projects were formed to fill the void. Nate Castle formed a side project entitled, Nate Castle and The Sliders, which is now defunct. He also performs solo throughout the Metro-Detroit area in addition to performing acoustic shows with trombonist Jeremiah Hoehner, trombonist Dave Jakubowski and bassist Dave Krogh. Drummer Steve Zdanio formed the cover band The Domino Rally, which continues to perform in the Metro-Detroit area. Mike Thomas performs and tours nationally as a solo act, in addition to performing with the bands Moxie, Big Nixon and The Hotel Wellingtons all based in New York. Guitarist Gerry Castle performs with the Balduck Mountain Ramblers. Trombone player Dave Jakubowski performs with the band Blasé Splee.
Do It Again and Sony Music (2021-present)[edit]
In July 2023, PBM released their 5 track EP Do It Again and it was self released. To follow up the album, the band did a concert in Pontiac, Michigan of the release of the album. The EP would be released on the label Poorboy Records until they got a message from Sony.
On July 27, 2023, PBM did a fundraiser concert for school music programs at The Crofoot Ballroom. PBM Record Release Party was a live concert video shoot that featured PBM, Mass Dispute, Matt Webber, Prana Songbird, and Joshua Watkins and Revelation.
In late 2023, the band had an encounter with Sony Music. After the release of Do It Again They had received a record deal from Sony. They accepted the offer and the plan was for Sony to release all their studio albums on the Sony label in early 2024
