The PS Etona is a privately owned side-wheeler paddle steamer launched on the Murray River in 1898.
History
1890s
Etona was launched as a mission steamer, with the intention of operating regular trips between Morgan or Mannum and Renmark. While the forepart of the vessel was used as a saloon, the cabin was a small saloon. The minister onboard doubled as a captain.[1] On August 16, 1898, Etona arrived at Renmark; the Rev Dr Harmer held services on board the following Sunday with the assistance of Rev H M Wylie.[2] In September of the same year, the service due in Holder on the 18th was suspended due to the vessel grounding on a sandbank.[3] During its year of launch, the boiler of Etona gave way, being replaced at a cost of £87.[4]
