The Palestinian Intifada (2022) commenced in March 2022,[3] due to the impasse in political progress, increased Israeli settlement building, and the growth of right-wing extremism. It is believed that hostilities began in Tel Aviv at the start of March 2022.[4][5]

Background[edit]

The Oslo Accords, signed in 1993, were intended to bring about the creation of a Palestinian state by 1999;[6] however, because the parties could not reach agreement on certain points as well as an increase in violence, this goal was not achieved. The Palestinians have become disheartened by the political deadlock that has been in place since 2006 due to the lack of presidential or parliamentary elections, along with the siege of Gaza and attacks from settlers on their villages and farms.

Timeline[edit]

Diplomacy[edit]

On February 26, a high-level meeting was held in Aqaba between the two parties, which is described as surprising. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Palestinian Authority, Israel, Jordan, Egypt and the United States. The two sides agreed to take steps to resume security coordination and to strengthen the PA's security services to deal with the uprising.[7][8]

The Palestinian parties have widely condemned the normalization assembly, saying it seeks to liquidate the Intifada and the Palestinians' right to self-defense.[9][10]
