Pancho Miller was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips in the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers during the 1980s. He was a forward, playing for Melchester Rovers, and Scotland. He first appeared in the strip in 1986.[1]
Career
Club
Under coach Archie Brown, Miller won the 83/84 English title with Portdean. Then a big transfer to Cerino followed with more success: the 84/85 Serie A and the Cup Winners' Cup a year later. That 1986 European final was his most memorable moment of his career, as he stated.
The former Scotland and Portdean star was signed for Melchester Rovers from Italian Cerino for a big £600,000 fee in 1986. His best moment came in the 1987 Milk Cup Final when he went in goal, allowing Roy free to score the winner.
His ambition was to win the treble (League, Cup and League Cup).
International
In 1986 it was mentioned he had 32 Scotland caps. However, he was left out of the 1986 World Cup squad, his biggest disappointment of his career. Probably he didn't play for Scotland afterwards.
Style of play
Pancho, as he was known, had a reputation for taking control, and he attempted to do similar at the Rovers.
Managerial career
He became player-manager of Carlton Town, leading them to promotion from the Third Division.
Legacy
Pancho Miller was one of the best British players to play in Serie A. He was one of the few fictional players to win at least three league titles with three different clubs (Jimmy Grant was one among others).
Personal life
He was known for his trademark mustache. In 1986 he was still single and he was looking to buy a house in Melchester. His favourite other sport was windsurfing.
- Football childhood hero: Willie Johnston (dazzling Rangers winger of the 1970s)
- Favourite current team (86/87): Glasgow Rangers
- Biggest influence on career: Archie Brown, his former coach at Portdean.
Honours
All of these records are fictional, of course, and only date as far as 2000, the last fully completed season of the comic strip.
