Pangeanic is a Spanish technology company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), and machine translation. Founded in 2000 and based in Valencia, Spain, the company develops language technology products and has participated in several European Union‑funded research projects.[1]

History

Pangeanic was founded by Manuel Herranz, an engineer and linguist. The company initially operated as a translation service provider and later shifted toward machine learning and natural language processing technologies in the 2010s.[2] In 2010, the company introduced a commercial version of the open‑source Moses machine translation platform under the name PangeaMT.[3]

In the 2010s, Pangeanic collaborated with the PRHLT research center at the Polytechnic University of Valencia on machine translation research.[4] It was later selected for the Lanzadera accelerator program, founded by Juan Roig.[5]

Since 2020, Pangeanic has been a contractor for the Spanish Tax Agency (Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria, AEAT), providing automated translation services for documents, texts, and files.[6]

In 2021, the company joined the Pre‑Market Environment (Entorno Pre‑Mercado) of Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME), a program for growth‑stage companies seeking access to investors.[7]

In 2023, the company was listed as an awarded contractor for public sector projects in Spain’s official gazette, the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE).[8] In 2025, it received the “Innovative SME” (PYME Innovadora) designation from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.[9]

In November 2024, the Spanish Congress of Deputies awarded Pangeanic a contract for transcription services for parliamentary speeches delivered in Spain's co‑official languages (Catalan, Galician, and Basque). The contract was part of a broader framework to implement the use of these languages in the Chamber.[10][11] The award was also reported by Heraldo de Aragón.[12] The formal contract was published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado in January 2025.[13]

In December 2024, ABC reported that the Congress had initiated a monitoring process for three of the four awarded companies, including Pangeanic, due to their unusually low bids.[14]

European Union projects

Pangeanic has participated in several EU‑funded projects focused on language technology and digital infrastructure:

  • MAPA (Multilingual Anonymisation for Public Administrations): Coordinated by Pangeanic, this project developed an open‑source toolkit for anonymizing medical and legal data to assist EU public administrations with GDPR compliance.[1][15]
  • NTEU (Neural Translation for the EU): A project to build neural machine translation engines for all official EU languages. Datasets produced were later used to train the “Salamandra” language model at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.[16][17]
  • MOSAIC MEDIA (2024–2026): An EU‑funded project developing an AI‑enhanced platform for European broadcasters to enable transcription, translation, and subtitling across multiple languages. Partners include broadcasters such as 3Cat, RTV SLO, VRT, Sky Italia, and Deutsche Welle.[18][19][20]

Technology

Pangeanic develops sovereign AI platforms for machine translation and language processing. Its “Deep Adaptive” machine translation technique retrains models on client‑specific data to improve accuracy.[21]
