Pankaj Chandra

Introduction

Pankaj Chandra is an Indian educationist, management expert, author and academic. He was Director of Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, from 2007 to 2013.[1] and is the Vice Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Management, Ahmedabad University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India since October 2015[2]. He is also one of the founding members of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) whose goal is to improve governance and strengthen democracy by working in the area of Electoral and Political Reforms. He is the author of Building Universities That Matter – Where are Indian Institutions Going Wrong? published by Orient Blackswan[3].

Early Life

Pankaj Chandra was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He completed his schooling from St. Joseph's High School, Allahabad, India in the year 1978. He holds a BTech degree from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India, and a PhD from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Career

Chandra has held tenured appointments at McGill University in Montreal and IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) and has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Geneva, International University of Japan, Cornell University, and Renmin University, Beijing.  He has worked briefly with The World Bank in Washington DC. He was the Chairperson of the Doctoral Programme at IIM Ahmedabad and the first Associate Dean (Academic) at Indian School of Business[4], Hyderabad. He was part of the founding team at the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship at IIMA and its first Chairperson. He was also a Professor of Operations & Technology Management at IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore.  

He has served as member of the Government of India Committee on Clusters for Development of the Informal Sector[5].  He was a member of the two High Powered Committees - the Government of India Committee on Rejuvenation of Higher Education (Yashpal Committee)[6] that relooked at the Indian Higher Education system and the Committee on the Autonomy of Central Institutions[7]. He was a member of two Steering Committees constituted by the Planning Commission of India for 12th Plan Development, one on Higher & Technical Education (where he also chaired the Sub-Committee on Student Financial Aid), and the other on Industry[8].  He was a member of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) subcommittee on Teacher Education[9]. He was also a member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the regulator of the telecom industry[10].

Chandra has been involved in several startups, has also been a consultant to large Indian and multi-national firms and serves on the Boards and Academic Councils of several firms and institutions  - Mindtree[11], BIRAC[12], NID[13], IGIDR[14], Srishti School of Art, Design &Technology[15], Bangalore, Film & Television Institute of India, Pune, IIT Jodhpur[16], IIIT  Bangalore, IIIT Dharwad[17] and Banaras Hindu University.

Research

Pankaj Chandra’s research and teaching interests include Manufacturing Management, Supply Chain Coordination, Building Technological Capabilities, higher education policy, and hi-tech entrepreneurship. He has published in international refereed journals and has served on the editorial boards of several international journals. He has been conducting the national survey on Competitiveness of Indian Manufacturing for the last 20 years.
