The Panthers–Redskins rivalry is a developing National Football League (NFL) series between the Carolina Panthers and Washington Redskins. Both franchises have frequently met in the regular season over the years and have never faced each other in the playoffs. Geography plays a big role in the rivalry given Charlotte and D.C. being approximately 6 hours apart via I-85 and I-95. Washington leads the all-time series 9–6.[1]
History[edit]
The Panthers and Redskins first played each other in the 1995 regular season, which was the Panthers' inaugural season, with Washington winning 20–17. In 2016, things became fascinating when the Panthers released Pro Bowl cornerback Josh Norman, who then signed with the Redskins. Later that year in the regular season, the two teams met with Washington looking to stay in the playoff hunt with a win, but the Panthers had other ideas and won the game 26–15 which put the Redskins on the brink. Both teams would then meet again in 2018, with Washington winning 23–17 and snapping a five-game losing streak against the Panthers. They would meet each other again in the 2019 NFL season, with Washington winning 29-21 after trailing 14-0 early in the game. On January 1, 2020, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera was hired to become the new head coach of the Redskins, their 29th in team history.[2] At his introductory press conference, Rivera stated that he became convinced that the team was the right fit for his next coaching job after having meetings with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and former head coach Joe Gibbs, which started almost immediately after he was fired from the Panthers.[3][4]
