Papan Bunga
Papan Bunga (Indonesian for "flower board", "papan" for "board", "bunga" for "flowers") are displays to congratulate in Indonesia for weddings, births and other festive occasions as well as to condolence for funerals. The corresponding messages are written with letters composed by many plastic flowers. The colorfully designed panels are placed in front of the respective residential houses, but often they are also arrayed in groups along busy streets.[1]
Concept and construction[edit]
Papan Bunga are about 2 x 1.5 meters tall. However, also double sized, two-piece boards exist.
The messages are highly formalized: Mostly, the congratulations are positioned at the top, for example "Selamant Sukses". Then the names of the corresponding persons follow. Sometimes the villages of their origin are added. The flower boards are donated, for example by acquaintances or the employer. Their name or company logo can be shown below. The writing is complemented by simple symbols and ornamental elements made of flowers, or added with other materials such as Styrofoam.
Papan Bunga are created by special floralists. The boards are made of rectangular wooden or iron frames. On this a kind of carpet is stretched, behind which is a layer of foam. The flowers, usually made of plastic, are attached with pins. The finished flower boards are transported to their presentation location and displayed on easels. After a while they will be removed. The material is reused for new content.[2]
