Papyrus AB is a Swedish wholesale company operating across Europe, specializing in the distribution of paper and packaging in the business-to-business sector. The company's headquarters are located in Mölndal, near Gothenburg; it also has subsidiaries in various European countries, including the Netherlands and Switzerland. Papyrus AB is part of the parent group OptiGroup, which was known as Papyrus Holding until 2017.[3]
History
The company traces its origins back to 1895, when the Swedish Wallenberg family acquired a paper mill in Mölndal and named the newly founded business Papyrus (after the writing material papyrus).[4] The paper mill remained in continuous operation throughout the 20th century and was a significant employer in Mölndal.[5] In 1976, it acquired the wood mill Kopparfors in Ockelbo.[6]
Starting in 1987, Papyrus became fully owned by the Finnish-Swedish group Stora (later Stora Enso),[6][4] one of the world's largest producers of paper and packaging materials. Within Stora Enso, Papyrus was primarily responsible for fine paper.[7][8]
In April 2008, the Stora Enso Group sold Papyrus entirely to the Swedish investment company Altor Equity Partners. The deal included a long-term paper supply agreement between Stora Enso and Papyrus.[9] Later that same year, Altor sold a minority stake to the British-Swedish-German investment company Triton Partners.[10]
In 2017, the parent company Papyrus Holding was renamed OptiGroup. The Papyrus name was retained as a brand for parts of the group.[3][11]
In December 2021, the private equity company FSN Capital acquired a majority stake in OptiGroup.[12]
Corporate Structure
Papyrus AB is part of OptiGroup and also serves as a holding company for its own subsidiaries.[13] Papyrus AB comprises over 15 subsidiaries in countries including Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, and Poland.[2] In 2024, the group employed over 2,300 people and generated revenue of €1.415 billion.[2]
Products and Services
Papyrus operates across Europe in the business-to-business sector, supplying customers with graphical paper and board, office paper, packaging and other business supplies. In addition, the group also offers hygiene and cleaning products, personal protective equipment, and industrial packaging materials.[13] Its brands include Multi (coated papers),[14] Plano (uncoated papers), Rainbow (colored papers),[15] RecyStar (recycled paper) and Balance (recycled offset paper).[16]
