Plot summary[edit]

Two singers, Nadia and Ângelo, were a Brazilian couple with a daughter, Celeste, born in 1987. Nadia betrayed Ângelo and had a son, Odair, with João Oliveira Santana (a police captain). João beat Nadia, causing her to lose her hearing. He also impregnated Ângelo's 18-year-old sister, Eva, conceiving a boy, Imã, in 1997. In December of that year, while Nadia was hospitalized in a coma from João's violence, a black-eyed and seven-months-pregnant Eva murdered João, as young Odair looked on in fear.

During her 20-year sentence, Eva gave birth to Imã and fell in love with fellow inmate Milene, who was apparently innocently imprisoned. After Nadia recovered from her coma she disappeared as a housebound recluse. Odair looked after her, and grew up to be a police officer.

Most of the film is set in 2017. Odair pulls over a singer, Teylor (one of Celeste's two suitors), for speeding. Teylor invites Odair to his show at the Paraíso Perdido nightclub and Odair attends. He happens to protect Imã from homophobic attackers. José, the father of Eva and Ângelo, asks Odair to take a night job protecting his grandson Imã. Odair accepts and notices a picture of his mother, Nadia, posted prominently in Ângelo's dressing room. Celeste is pregnant with either Teylor or Joca's baby, and is seeking an abortion in 10 days' time. She also visits her aunt Eva in prison and is told that after Eva's mother disappeared, José quit an academic job to work in the Paraíso Perdido. After Eva is released from prison, Odair begins a relationship with her and helps Milene to get out of prison as well; they form a thruple. Imã forms a relationship with a teacher, Pedro. Odair learns from Milene that Eva hasn't been truthful about her past; Odair investigates with a colleague, learns that Eva killed his father, and sets up a reunion of Nadia and Ângelo.
