Paraduin (parallel world) is a micronation established on 1 April 2015 as a monarchy by Prince Ogidius (Dutch: Prins Ogidius).[1] Its activities are primarily cultural.[2]

Location

Paraduin's main territorial claim, Siga, is situated at the largest green-colored pocket of contested territory. The yellow-colored areas to the east are claimed by both Serbia and Croatia. According to Croatia, the green parts belong to Serbia, while Serbia states they are Croatia's.

Paraduin's territorial claim consists of two distinct locations. The administrative center is a house within the city limits of Rotterdam, Netherlands. The second location, Siga, is an uninhabited parcel of contested land on the right bank of the Danube between Croatia and Serbia, which neither country covets.[1]

Serbia considers all areas east of the current river course to be theirs, while Croatia claims the land west of the river's former course. Claiming Siga would imply relinquishing all rights to several much larger territories on the left bank of the Danube. Therefore, some consider the area terra nullius. However, it is expected that the two former Yugoslav republics will eventually resolve their differences.[3]

Siga is approximately 7 km2.[3] This includes a floodplain forest, known locally as Gornja Siga (Upper Siga), and a river island, Siga Szeget (Siga Island). The area is uninhabited, and international treaties regarding the Danube require it to maintain its ecological function. Part of the land is privately owned by a logging company, while the beach and sandy river island allow for occasional tourism.[4]

History

Although Paraduin claimed Siga on 5 March 2015,[5] the micronation's official founding day is 1 April 2015, when it added the Rotterdam headquarters and declared itself a sovereign state.[6] With permanent residence guaranteed, the nation intends to meet the Montevideo criteria for statehood.[7]

Several other micronations also sought to acquire Siga, including South Maudlandia (18 March),[8] Liberland (13 April),[9] and Âûtia (17 April),[10] but arrived later.[11] A flag raised by Liberland representatives was removed within days.[12]

The Principality of Ongal claims the remaining, smaller parts of disputed territory on the Danube's right bank, totaling about 1.5 km2.

Economy

Paraduin is primarily a cultural nation. Current activities include administering the free online encyclopedia Wikisage, with Dutch and English versions, and writing and promoting a novel and other stories about a parallel world, also called Paraduin.[2] In June 2017, the Dutch version of Wikisage contained over 42,000 articles.[13]

In December 2016, Paraduin announced its participation in a film project, the horror thriller The Russian Bride, starring Kristina Pimenova, Oksana Orlan, and Corbin Bernsen, directed by Michael S. Ojeda. The micronation is represented by an executive producer.[14] Filming took place on location in March 2017 at the Scripps Mansion in Lake Orion, Michigan.[15][16][17]

Motto and constitution

The micronation's motto is 'Freedom in Solidarity',[1] and it supports the concept of a basic income.[10]

Paraduin's constitution consists of 11 articles. It guarantees all citizens fair treatment and freedom of thought. While the monarch's power is otherwise absolute, fair treatment is considered an inalienable right. Other constitutional rights can be limited only if necessary for fair treatment.[18]
