Parirau (meaning "ancient wing" in Māori) is a dubious genus of pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous period, belonging either to the Azhdarchidae or the Lonchodectidae.[1] It was the first pterosaur discovered in New Zealand,[2] being found near the Mangahouanga Stream, in the Tahora Formation.[3] The type species, Parirau ataroa, was tentatively described by Carlos Albuquerque in 2019.[3] It probably had a wingspan of around 3.75 metres (12.3 ft) long.[2]
The first mention of NZMS CD 467, the holotype of Parirau, was in 1988 by Joan Wiffen and Ralph Molnar.[2] The bone was discovered by Wiffen. The ulna was studied many times until it was described in 2019. Most paleontologists agree that the name Parirau is informal, therefore a nomen nudum.
