T.K. Narayanan – was a renowned English Scholar. He started schooling in English Missionary School Kollam. Passed Lower Secondary Cambridge University Exam. He took F.A. graduation from Madras University. He was a famous orator in English and Malayalam Languages.

Career

Started his career as a teacher in 1900. He was the first English teacher of Cravan High School, Kollam. Gave up his profession to start “English Tuition home” in 1901, the first of its kind in India – the pioneer and founder of Tutorial System in India.

In 1902 he became the Chief Editor of “Sujana Nandini” – Newspaper, the first of its kind in the caste ridden Travancore for the uplift of the downtrodden.

In 1904 October 16, as per the instructions of his maternal uncle – Paravoor Kesavanasan, T.K. Narayanan organized the first historical public meeting of Sree Narayana Guru at Pozhikkara, Paravoor, Kollam, where Guru made his first Social Reforming Declaration, denouncing "Thalikattu", "Pulikudi" and introducing new procedure in marriages. Sree Narayana Guru nominated T.K. Narayanan as the secretary of SNDP Yogam second annual meeting in 1905, which was the first convention with Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition even in India.

In 1905 T.K. became the first Organizing Secretary (Sanghatana Secretary) of SNDP Yogam and manager of "Vivekodayam" Magazine started by SNDP Yogam.

In 1905 in the second annual meeting of the Yogam, T.K. Narayanan presented a resolution seeking the amendment of Yogam’s bylaw, which was the first Resolution in the history of SNDP Yogam. He chaired many special meetings and annual meetings of SNDP Yogam, from 1905 to 1937. As Organising Secretary of the Yogam, he served the Community without receiving any remuneration, and strengthened the Organisation and the community on the whole.

In 1934, he was the reception committee Chairman of Yogam’s 31st annual meeting and he was instrumental for the selection of C. Kesavan as the General Secretary of SNDP Yogam in this meeting. In 1919 he presented a Resolution exhorting for the Temple entry rights.

In 1911 T.K. was one among the 5 partners of Kerala Koumudi Newspaper when it was started from Mayyanadu in 1911 February 1. T.K. Narayanan was the first Printer, Publisher and Chief Editor of “Deshabhimani” newspaper in 1915 April 16, when it was restarted from Kollam, under the ownership of K.P. Kayalakkal and T.K. Narayanan . In 1914 he published a newspaper namely Panchajanyam. From 1914-1919 he published a popular newspaper “Amritha Bharathi” from Kollam which was having circulation in Kochi, Malabar states as well.

In 1915 T.K. Narayanan registered a trade union and conducted a labourer’s strike at Kollam which had succeeded its goal for the first time in India.

In 1915 T.K. wrote and published a controversial book “Hanumante Poonool” (Monkey God’s holy String) which severely criticized the Caste System. T.K. Narayanan had immense experience in writing biographies. He wrote and published biographies of Swami Vivekanandan (1911), Sree Ramakrishna Paramahamsan, Rajaram Mohanroy, Karl Max (1922), Lenin (1922), Paravoor Kesavanasan (1917) etc. T.K. Translated Shakespeare’s “Tempest” – into Malayalam with his own title “Mandakini” in 1917. Another popular translation was the dissertation of Charles Lamb and Marry Lamb about Shakespearian Dramas.

In 1921 T.K. published the first biography book of Sree Narayana Guru . Even though Kumaranasan started writing biography of Guru in 1915, he stopped it due to some unknown reasons in 1916. In complete form and pattern, T.K. Narayanan is the first author of “Sree Narayana Guru’s Biography” in book form. In 1917 he started a limited company by name “Malabar Vyavasaya Company” for the benefit of the whole community, irrespective of cast or creed.

In 1925 T.K. Narayanan, registered “Malayalam Vyavasaya Company Ltd.” for writers and Publishers, the pioneer organization of its kind in the whole of India. During his long travel and propagation against castism and for the upliftment of the down trodden T.K. Narayanan died in 1939 at Singapore due to some physical illness at the age of 57.
