"Patience" is the opening and title track to George Michael's final album Patience. An instrumental version of song called, "Patience (Pt. 2)", appears as last track of the album. Both were written, produced and arranged by George Michael.

Composition[edit]

Accompanied only by a piano, the song lyrically continues with the some of the anti-war themes on the album. The Chicago Tribune described it as "ballad about feeling blinkered by the war machine."[1] As one of the last tracks written and recorded for the album, Michael commented about the song and his decision to choose it as the album title:

Well, I struggled for a long time to come up with a title. Quite often, the title emerges from the last few tracks you record for an album. My best work tends to be towards the end of the album because most of the anxiety is gone. I couldn't think of anything. In a way, when I hit on patience, it made sense for two reasons. One, because of the time and energy I had spent on the Iraq situation and the secular vs religious world situation. To me, we are being introduced via satellite in a very rude manner. On top of that, we have war, which almost all of us believe is about oil. I believe the only thing that will save us from total destruction is patience.[2]

Live[edit]

The song was played extensively during Michael's final concert tour, Symphonica Tour.
