Patostream (pato - from "pathology", stream - from "stream".[1]) – a live Internet broadcast conducted on streaming video sites (e.g. YouTube), during which behaviors that are socially deviant are presented, including especially such things as alcoholic libations, domestic violence or numerous vulgarities.[2][3]. Subsequent activities are sometimes performed in exchange for small monetary payments made by viewers[4].

Against the authors of patostreams, in whose activity prohibited acts are perceived, actions are taken to establish their legal responsibility[5].

In Poland, the phenomenon of their emergence increased significantly in 2017-2018[2]. The Give Kids Strength Foundation published a report showing that 84% of surveyed teenagers aged 13-15 had heard the term patostreaming, while 43% of those surveyed regularly watch demoralizing broadcasts. Another study, conducted by NASK - National Research Institute called Parents of Teens 3.0, also revealed that only 12% of parents know about the material their children watch[6]. In October 2018, the Ombudsman set up a Roundtable to combat online pathotreatment[7].

The effects of watching patostreams among viewers may be in the long run:

  • Assimilation of previously unknown behavior by the observer,
  • Weakening the brakes holding back aggression,
  • Taking over the emotions and motivations of the observed patostreamer[4]
