Patrick Adebola

Patrick Adebola is a Nigerian Agricultural Research Scientist. His specialty is Applied Genetics, Plant Breeding and biotechnology. He has been the executive director of Cocoa Research Institute, Ibadan Oyo State, Nigeria since 2020.[1][2] He is also the secretary of Nigeria's National Cocoa Management Committee.[3]

Patrick Adebola obtained his BSc (1987), MSc (1990)and PhD (2003) degrees from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. In 2014 he obtained a Master's degree in Business Leadership (MBL) from the Graduate School of Business Leadership, University of South Africa.[4]

Career[edit]

He had started his career at Cocoa Research Institute, Ibadan Oyo State, Nigeria as a research scientist in 1993. By 2004, he had risen to the position of Assistant Chief Research Officer and Program Manager Biotechnology in the organization. From 2005 to 2016, Patrick Adebola worked as a Research Team Manager and Head of the Plant Breeding DivisionAgricultural Research Council, ARC-VOPI, South Africa.  In 2016, he moved to Africa Rice Centre, Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI), Liberia. He was a postdoctoral fellow from 2004 to 2005 in the Department of Botany, University of Fort Hare, South Africa.[4]

He later joined (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture) IITA, Nigeria as the Project Leader of AfricaYam, a  project that sought to increase the availability of yam at reduced costs and which was carried out in different institutions spread across four African countries namely: the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) and the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) in Nigeria; the Crops Research Institute and the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute which are two research institutes under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Ghana; le Centre National de Recherche Agronomique (CNRA), Côte d'Ivoire; and l’Université d’Abomey-Calavi (UAC), Dassa Center, Benin.[5]

The project seeks to improve the genetic sequence for increased productivity and quality of the white yam (Dioscorea rotundata), which originated in West Africa, and water yam (D. alata) which came from the Asia/Pacific region as the two major species of yam cultivated in the four West African countries known as the yam belt.[6]

In August, 2022, he became the secretary of the National Cocoa Management Committee which has been charged to develop a framework for activities in the cocoa sector for transparency purposes and create a clear pathway aimed at ensuring that Nigeria joins the Ghana/Côte d'Ivoire cocoa initiative among other objectives.[7]
