Toluwalase Awoyemi is a Nigerian physician and medical researcher. His work focuses on cardiovascular epidemiology and maternal health disparities. A Rhodes Scholar and recipient of the Dale Abel Award, his research focuses on molecular biomarkers for preeclampsia and AI applications in cardiac imaging. Education and career
Awoyemi was born in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. He earned his medical degree (MBBS) with distinction in Pharmacology from the University of Ibadan in 2016. In 2018, he was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship to pursue a DPhil in Women's and Reproductive Health at the University of Oxford. His doctoral research focused on molecular markers found in placental extracellular vesicles related to early-onset preeclampsia.[4][5][6][7]
He completed internal medicine training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (2021–2024), receiving the Dale Abel Award in 2025 for excellence in clinical care, research, and mentorship.[3][8]

Awoyemi's research covers maternal cardiovascular health and medical application of Artificial Intelligence.
In a 2023 study published in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, Awoyemi and collaborators performed transcriptomic analysis of syncytiotrophoblast-derived extracellular vesicles (STB-EVs), identifying 12 dysregulated genes—including FLNB, COL17A1, SLC45A4, LEP, HTRA4, PAPP-A2, EBI3, HSD17B1, FSTL3, INHBA, SIGLEC6, CGB3—as potential biomarkers for early-onset preeclampsia.[9]
He also co-developed a dual-lobe placental perfusion method to isolate small and medium/large EV subtypes with approximately 78% precision. In a 2022 publication in Clinical Science, his team identified elevated levels of Filamin B and Collagen 17A1 proteins using proteomic analysis, highlighting their diagnostic potential.[10]
Awoyemi is co-author of a 2025 review in Clinical Cardiology examining applications of artificial intelligence in non-invasive cardiac imaging. The review discusses AI's utility in improving image quality, analysis speed, and diagnostic accuracy in modalities such as echocardiography, MRI, and CT, with a focus on maternal cardiac outcomes.[11]
