Patricia "Patti" Garamendi (born April 11, 1944) is an American attorney, rancher and politician from California and a member of the Democratic Party.[1]

Early life[edit]

Patricia Alice Wilkinson was born on April 11, 1944, in Watsonville, Santa Cruz Country, California. She attended UC Berkley and holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a J.D. from UC Berkeley's Humphrey's Law School.[2] She met her future husband John at Berkeley. They married in 1965 and served together in the Peace Corps from 1966 to 1968, stationed in Ethiopia.[3]

Political campaigns[edit]

In 1990 John Garamendi won the Democratic primary for the newly created office of State Insurance Commissioner. He was so confident of victory against a weak Republican opponent that he resigned his state senate seat early, allowing Patti to get a jump on her top rival, assemblyman Patrick Johnston (D-Stockton). Despite pouring more than $700,000 into the race (much if it from her own pocket) she lost to Johnston by 9 percentage points.[4]

In 1991 she ran for Johnston's vacant seat in the California State Assembly. Although initially considered a favorite, Patti was upset by Republican Dean Andal, a former aide to Rep. Norm Shumway (R-Roseville) by more than 14 points.[5]

In 1992 she ran once again, this time for the newly drawn Stockton area 11th congressional district. It contained some of the same territory in both the state assembly and state senate seats she had previously run for. She easily won the Democratic primary but went on to narrowly lose the general election to Republican Richard Pombo by 2 percentage points.[6]

State and federal posts[edit]

In 1993 she became associate director of the Peace Corps.[7] In 1998, she was appointed deputy administrator of the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service, where she ran an international food cooperation program.[8]

Returning to California, she served as deputy secretary of the Technology, Trade and Commerce agency under Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. In 2005, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her deputy secretary of the Business, Transportation and Housing agency.[9]

Recognition[edit]

On March 25, 2024, she was named Sacramento County Woman of the Year by state senator Bill Dodd.[10]
