Paul Davis (born March 18th 1981) is an English filmmaker, author and actor.

Beginning his career as a Cinema Historian, Davis first gained recognition for writing and producing a feature length documentary on the making of An American Werewolf in London, before moving on to short films and eventually features. His first short film, Him Indoors (2012), was received with great acclaim, and led to directing The Body (2013). The film traveled the festival circuit, picking up multiple awards, including the Melies d'Or at the Sitges Film Festival in 2014.

Davis made the jump to feature directing, with a Hollywood adaptation of The Body for Blumhouse and Hulu as the inaugural episode of the horror anthology series Into the Dark, and Uncanny Annie, the first feature episode of season 2.

Career[edit]

After three years studying at the University of East London, to attain a BA Honors Degree in Cinema History, Davis started his career as a writer for various global print and web based outlets, specializing in genre cinema.

He made the leap to documentary filmmaking in 2009 when he wrote, directed and produced a feature length documentary on the making of An American Werewolf in London - which appeared on the Blu-Ray release of the film as a bonus feature. In the wake of this Paul developed a close personal and professional relationship with director John Landis, even appearing in a cameo in Landis' 2010 version of Burke & Hare with Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis.

Davis’ first fictional short film, Him Indoors (2012), starred Reece Shearsmith and Pollyanna McIntosh, and went on to win five awards – including Best Short and Best Actor – at festivals worldwide. He followed that up with the short dark comedy The Body (2013), starring Alfie Allen, Hannah Tointon and Christian Brassington. The Body received its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, was nominated for Best Short film at the TriBeca Film Festival and went on to win four prizes, including the prestigious Melies d’Or at the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival.

In addition to his cameo in Burke & Hare, standing at 6ft 8" he is regularly called upon to play creatures and monsters - most notably opposite Peter Capaldi, as the King Sandman in the 2015 Doctor Who episode, 'Sleep No More', and more recently as a wookiee slave in Solo - A Star Wars Story.

In 2016, Davis adapted his 2009 documentary Beware The Moon into a 200-page, limited edition, hardback book for Dead Mouse Productions & Cult Screenings Ltd. The book quickly sold out it's one thousand print run, prompting the publishers to green light a second paperback edition in 2017. Davis followed this up with a limited edition book on the making of the cult 1987 vampire movie, The Lost Boys. Released in late 2017, the book proved to be more successful than the first, promptly selling out in two limited print runs.

In 2018 Davis co-wrote and directed his first feature film for Blumhouse Productions and Hulu, an adaptation of his short The Body, starring Tom Bateman, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Aurora Perrineau, and Ray Santiago. The film served as the premier episode of the new Blumhouse/Hulu anthology series Into The Dark, which The New York Times hailed as “a clever and grotesque piece of work”, and Nerdist proclaimed “… the funniest film that Blumhouse has ever produced.”

In the Spring of 2019, Davis returned to helm the season 2 opener for Into the Dark, tackling Halloween again with Uncanny Annie. Starring Adelaide Kane, the film infused the 'teens in peril dynamic' of The Faculty with killer board game classic, Jumanji. The film premiered on Hulu on October 4th 2019, had it's UK premier at FrightFest in November 2019 and is currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
