Paul Tosari
Paul Tosari was a Java evangelist based in Surabaya. He is known among the Christians of East Java. The existence of the Christian Church Jawi Wetan currently also is not due to a lack of effort. Paul Tosari was also known by many people outside the area because he was writing lessons of religion in the form of song or poem in Javanese.
Paul Tosari was born in 1813 and died in 1882. He had studied at the seminary but did not perform well. Tosari studied with Coolen in 1840. Paul Tosari is one of the followers of Coenrad Laurens Coolen who was expelled from Ngoro and originally lived in Sidokare. After moving from Sidokare to Mojowarno, he actually appeared as the spiritual leader of the congregation. He became an evangelist and church teacher in Mojowarno. In his leadership, Mojowarno developed freely and was full of enthusiasm for self-sufficiency. Paul Tosari’s main desire was to break away from the shadow of the Protestant Church in Surabaya. He also did evangelism in the area that stretches between Sidoarjo and Madison. All of his evangelism was done in about 1848.
