Perpetua is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. She is the mother of Monitor, Anti-Monitor, and World Forger. Perpetua first appeared in Justice League Vol. 4 #8 and was created by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Jim Cheung, and Jorge Jiménez.

Fictional character biography[edit]

Throughout the void, the Super Celestials called the Hands were tasked to birth Multiverses using the positive Connective Energies and then dying, giving themselves to the newborn reality. However, the rogue among them wanted a vicious reality meant to live forever in a self-renewing loop of crisis and rebirth.[1]

The name of that rogue Super Celestial was Perpetua. She created the first iteration of the Multiverse using the negative Crisis Energies and created her three sons Mar Novu, Mobius, and Alpheus, as its first inhabitants. Once created, Perpetua explained to them that her Multiverse comprises of three main realms made out of the three basic forms of matter: dark matter, positive matter, and antimatter, and created them to monitor these realms. She assigned Alpheus to the Dark Multiverse beneath creation where he would build the myriad universes of creation. Mar Novu was assigned to the positive matter realm where he would guard the many universes that rose out of the dark from cosmic crises. Mobius was assigned to the Anti-Matter Universe where he would prevent the light of creation to breach the Greater Omniverse. Curious, Mar Novu asked Perpetua what her purpose in this Multiverse was, as her role as creator had already been fulfilled. She told him that she would remain to make sure that all of her children lived.[2]

Five billion years later, Perpetua was approached by Mar Novu on Earth-0, she shows him her latest creation, the Apex Predators, explaining that she searched in all universes for beings with great potential and when she did, she found them imperfect so she bound them with the green beings of the neighboring planet, merging their worlds entirely. Troubled, he told her that he spied into the Greater Omniverse and found no double in her form in the neighboring Multiverses but a cosmic judgement coming for them because she have altered the core of creation into something evil and that she was well aware of that and wished to fight back. Perpetua then tried to share her point of view in vain, leading her to order her Apexes attack Novu, forcing him to flee.[2]

Two hundred years later, she confronted her sons, who were trying to alert the judges of her doings, with her Apexes but the fight was interrupted by a cosmic raptor, accusing Perpetua to have defied her function. The raptor then imprisoned her along with the totality of power she hoarded in the Source Wall and the Multiverse was then remade without her taints. Her kinds hoped that eventually, by watching the growth of the people of the Multiverse from the Source Wall, she would learn to love them but instead grown in rage, stocking desire, greed and the idea to make cosmic crisis to whoever hearing her whispers.[1]

After the invasion of the Dark Multiverse by her last scion, Barbatos and The Batman Who Laughs, Perpetua was freed from her prison.[3] The Totality landed on Earth-0 after the wall breaking. The fragments were found by Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom with almost six parts of her dark powers unlocked. However, doing this exhausted her energies to the point that she felt asleep.[4]

At some point, she awoke during the "Year of the Villain" event and remade Lex Luthor into an Apex Predator by splicing his DNA with Martian DNA. Perpetua made Lex Luthor her second in command after the later faked his own death.[5]

While the Justice League divided into two them during the "Justice/Doom War storyline, one for the Totality's shards which were across time and the other for recruiting Mobius, Perpetua and Lex were heading to the Promethean Galaxy with the intent to recruit her son Mobius. Meanwhile, Hypertime was within the grasp of Perpetua, allowing the Legion of Doom, who were in different timelines, to affect them as they see fit without erasing their present.[6]

Arrived in the Promethean Galaxy, she was confronted by Mobius and his brothers alongside the Justice Leauge. During the fight, the three brothers merged together to form the Ultra-Monitor, strong enough to fight their mother.[7] At the end of the battle, Starman and his analog from the past and future were going to open a portal to bring the rest of the Justice League who gathered the shards of the Totality across the past and the future however, due to fact that the psychic energy shifted toward doom and Hawkgirl's vendetta against Lex Luthor who previously absorbed J'onn J'onzz within himself, the portal closed before the rest of the league could join the battle and Perpetua was restored to all her might and then grant to Mobius who betrayed his brothers the Anti-Life Equation. Perpetuathen crushed Starman on her fist and and exclaimed that she have the entire Multiverse to remade.[8]

Perpetua later visited Earth-19, noticing that this world has doom in its core but its people still chose justice thus, she destroyed this universe for this. She then returned to the Promethean Galaxy explaining her plan to Lex and Mobius and remade every humans who believe in doom into Apex Predators. She was alerted by Lex that Hawkgirl was trying to flee with her newfound abilities, she was able to see her and turn off Hawkgirl's ship making it crashing somewhere else.[9]

At some point after the return of the Legion of Doom, Perpetua turned Brainiac into her throne and the other members as conduits of power for Lex now wielding The Seven Forces of the Universe.[10]

Then she traveled to Earth-44 and throw it toward her sons who were recently freed from their brother Mobius thanks to John Stewart's intervention but they managed to flee before the impact thanks to Alpheus' sacrifice. Much later, Perpetua came to Earth-0 to confront the Justice League who have defeated Lex Luthor and gathered Hawkgirl, John Stewart and Martian Manhunter. During the confrontation, Martian Manhunter managed to reach out the minds of all the people of the planet, trying to convince them to break free of Perpetua's lies which shifted the psychic balance toward justice, strings of energy started to wrap up Perpetua. Just as the victory was near for the league, the balance shifted for doom again which broke Perpetua free of her bonds. Perpetua explained that she allowed the psychic connection that Martian Manhunter had with Earth's people to happen because she wanted them to see their people rejecting them since she was the creator of the Multiverse and also explained that she left a piece of the Totality across time for Vandal Savage who will recruit the Luthors to find a way to unlock her powers as she planned. She then obliterated the Justice League without her knowing. What she didn't know was that they were saved by the Quintessence.[11]

After the defeat of the Justice League, the Multiverse was almost defenceless against Perpetua and Lex Luthor who rule over it. During a meeting she had with the Crime Syndicate of America of Earth-3, she turned its people into Apex Predators and killed Johnny Quick after his disagreement to join her. Later, she sent her second in charge Lex Luthor to Earth in order to eradicate The Batman Who Laughs and his Secret Six who were trying to spread the Dark Multiverse's infection throught the world. After Lex defeated the laughing Batman, he bring him before Perpetua, showing her his victory however, the evil Bruce tell her that she missed the Justice League on which she thought them dead were sent in quest to defeat her for good. Due to Lex's insolence, she chosen The Batman Who Laughs as her new second in command but not before Lex learning that the vision of future he had about the mans ruling over the gods was a hoax made by Perpetua in order to manipulate him, stripping Lex Luthor of his powers and she then send him back to Earth.[12]

Perpetua was confronted by the Justice League harnessing the Connective Energy at an unspecified date and ended on a massive blow that weakened both forces. She was however able to recover thanks to the Dark Multiverse conduit where the greatest Crisis happen forever as long people remember them. At some point, she destroyed Earth 22 with many others universes, reducing the Multiverse from fifty two universe to only eight so that she can restore it in her own image. The Batman Who Laughs becomes her lieutenant. Aided by an army of evil Batmen from the Dark Multiverse, they enforces her rule. Wally West later retells Wonder Woman about the story of Perpetua, how she has manipulated many of the previous Crises from behind the scenes, and how she survived the previous battle with the Justice League through the Batman Who Laughs.[1] Perpetua later ravishes Earth-30 and warns the Batman Who Laughs of the beings like her who may sense her actions (worried they might destroy her).[13]
