Perplexity AI, or simply Perplexity, is a web search engine integrated with artificial intelligence. It uses OpenAI's GPT large language model to process queries and synthesize a natural language response based on web search results.[2] With a conversational approach, Perplexity allows users to ask follow-up questions and receive an answer with citations to its sources from the internet.[4]
The Perplexity AI company was founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. It launched its flagship search engine on 7 December 2022, and has since released a Google Chrome extension and an iOS app.[1][4] In March 2023, Perplexity reported that it had acquired US$26 million in series A funding, with approximately 10 million visits each month and 2 million unique visitors in February 2023.[4][5]
Perplexity AI is built on Microsoft Azure infrastructure and uses Microsoft Bing to research sources on the web.[1][2] A free and public version of Perplexity employs the GPT-3.5 large language model by OpenAI, whilst the paid Copilot mode uses GPT-4 and has additional features for more in-depth research.[1][3]
