Perth Bayswater Rugby Union Club
Perth Bayswater Rugby Union Club is Western Australia's Oldest Active Rugby Club, founded in 1905[1]
Often referred to as Baysie, Perth Bayswater Rugby Club is a Rugby union club based in Morley, a suburb within the City of Bayswater, Western Australia.

With teams competing in Rugby WA administered competitions, including the Fortescue Premier Grade Competition[2] Founded in 1905 at a meeting in the Criterion Hotel Hay Street as Perth RUFC, the club holds the honour of being the oldest active club in Western Australia [1] Mr T.G Molloy was announced as the Club’s very first president following a second meeting [3] The Club regularly used the Criterion Hotel in the early days of its establishment.[4] During the early years of the Club, they used Langley Park as the club’s home pitch, using the nearby Grosvenor Hotel as its club rooms. [5] In the late 1920s Perth Ruby Club also established a Car Club [6] The first event with a group driving out to Ten Mile Well with regular events taking place thereafter. As well as other green spaces in the city, the Club used Wellington Square as its training location in the 1930s [7]
In 1951 Perth joined with Northern Suburbs to form Perth Suburbs Rugby Club. Moving in 1975 to the club’s current location, the Club has called Pat O'Hara Reserve home since this period. The move to Morley coincided with another name change for the club, becoming Perth-Bayswater Rugby Union Club.
The club colours are now black & white, however initially the club colours were blue with white hoops & dark shorts.[8]
Honours
The Perth Rugby Club started its existence in 1905 and won premierships in 1907 and 1910.
The club won first grade premierships in 1932, 1936, 1937, 1961, 1962, 1969, 1982, 1983[9], 1996. Most recently winning the competition in 2007.
Perth Bayswater Colts won the Colts competition in 2019[10]
2021 Season
The 2021 Season saw the club perform very well on the pitch, with all 3 Senior Mens Grades making the end of season finals.
Premier Grade losing their Semi Vs Kalamunda [11] [12] The Reserve & Third Grades made their way to the Grand Final [13] with The Reserves narrowly losing to Wanneroo & The Thirds to Associates.
A highlight of the 2021 Season saw the rearranged round 3 fixture taking vs Wests Scarborough taking place as the Curtain Raiser for the Western Force vs Bay of Plenty friendly at HBF Park. [14]
Coaches
The Premier Grade Coach for the upcoming 2022 season is Johan Bardoul, a former Western Force & Waikato Chiefs star. Johan played for Perth Bayswater during his time as a Western Force player. Johan previously represented Waikato & Bay of Plenty in his native New Zealand as well as the Chiefs in Super Rugby, he also had a stint in Japan with Yamaha & the Coca-Cola Red Sparks.[15] Assisting Johan again will be Sam Beard, the former Edinburgh & Dragons Centre will be looking to elevate the side further up the FMG Premier Grade Ladder. [16]

Notable Former Players
New Western Force recruit Reesjan Pasitoa played his Junior Rugby with Perth Bayswater [17] before starting his Super Rugby career with the Brumbies.
Notable Events
Perth Bayswater hosted the Rugby WA Grand Finals at Pat O'Hara Reserve in 2018, a massive event for the club & community attracting 3000 people.[18]
The 2019 Spring 7's Tournament [19] and most recently the 2021 Rugby WA State 7's Competition.
Life Members
Life members are awarded based on their service to Perth Bayswater Rugby Club, they must have given outstanding service to the club as a player, official, or member of the Club over a period of at least 10 years or more. They are nominated & then elected by the club's management & committee with a club presentation to follow.[20]
Hec Bristow has probably contributed more than any other individual in the history of the club. Hec started playing rugby for Highgate School in 1935 at the age of 16, but it wasn't until 1946, when Hec returned from service in World War II, that he began playing regularly for Perth Rugby Club, as it then was. Hec played halfback and flyhalf before embarking on a long career at fullback.
The club almost closed down in 1948 due to lack of numbers, when League started and many players left the club. Perth Club amalgamated with Northern Suburbs to become Perth-Suburbs. In 1952 Hec launched the beginning of a marathon career as Club President, a position he maintained for an astounding 25 years.
In 1956 Hec was awarded life membership of the club, and in 1958 Hec managed the State team to Victoria for the Southern States Carnival. In 1961 he was made a life member of the Western Australian Rugby union. In 1973 the club moved to Morley Reserve and became Perth-Bayswater RUC. In Hec's last year as President in 1977, the new club rooms at Morley Reserve opened.
Hec remained an active (and vocal) club supporter and a familiar sight at Morley Reserve until his death in 1995. Hec's memory will live on at Perth-Bayswater in recognition of the immense contribution he made in a lifetime of dedication to his club and his sport.
The club announced Jacob Buist as its newest Life Member in recognition of his service to the club and reaching 150 Premier Grade Games on 1st May 2021 vs UWA.[21]
