Cultural Significance
According to CNN Español, the series documents immigrant stories with host Roberto Pazos traveling with a backpack and camera across five continents to capture the experiences of Peruvians in their adoptive countries.[78]
Peruanos en el Mundo serves a significant diaspora community, with more than 3.5 million Peruvians living outside their country of origin as of 2024.[79] This represents over 10% of Peru's total population. Academic research on diaspora media demonstrates that such programming plays important roles in cultural preservation, identity maintenance, and helping immigrant communities maintain connections with their homeland.Georgiou, Myria (2013). "Diaspora in the Digital Era: Minorities and Media Representation" (PDF). Journal on Ethnopolitics and Minority Issues in Europe. 12 (4): 80–99."Influence of immigrants on television and radio". The program’s systematic documentation of Peruvian communities across six continents creates an audiovisual archive of the global Peruvian diaspora experience. Through interviews and cultural segments, the show captures first-person narratives about immigration experiences, cultural adaptation, and the maintenance of Peruvian identity in diverse international contexts. Scholars note that documentary filmmaking serves as “a valuable archive, capturing these elements before they disappear” and helps “document rituals, festivals, crafts, and oral histories, ensuring that future generations have access to this wealth of cultural knowledge.[80]
The program has produced more than 250 episodes documenting Peruvian communities across 50+ countries on six continents.[81]
According to Pazos in an interview with El Diario La Prensa, “The best takeaway I got from my travels while filming my show is how despite the language barriers, the cultural challenges and even the economic difficulties, Peruvians around the world have managed to make it through.” The program addresses the experiences of an estimated three million Peruvian immigrants living abroad.[5]
