Peter Carl Anderson is a Canadian-American playwright, actor and clown born in Detroit, Michigan in 1950.
Life and work[edit]
After attending the Residential College at the University of Michigan and the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre, Peter hitch-hiked to British Columbia, Canada in 1977 to join the horse-drawn Caravan Stage Company. His extensive body of work as a playwright — over a dozen plays — for the Caravan Farm Theatre[1][2] has been lauded as "populist high comedy.”[3] His plays have been performed internationally and across Canada, including the National Arts Centre. As a performer he’s most known for his lead role in the Canadian production The Overcoat[4][5], which toured internationally and was filmed for CBC-TV, and as a co-creator and performer in the physical comedy The Number 14. He’s performed in Waiting for Godot on three occasions (in the roles of Vladimir and Lucky) and appeared at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre in The Overcoat [6], The Tosca Project, and Fatherville. He’s the recipient of six Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards for Vancouver theatre[7], a Bay Area Critics’ Circle Award, Leo (BC) and Gemini (Canada) nominations for best performance in a film (The Overcoat), a NY Drama Desk nomination, as well as theatre nominations in Toronto and Calgary, and three Avery Hopwood Awards for fiction and poetry[8] at the University of Michigan. He lives in Vancouver with playwright and mask-designer Melody Anderson.
