Peter Gee (television presenter)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Peter Gee is an Australian television presenter, best known for his association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation where he worked for 38 years as a sports commentator and news presenter.[1]

Born in Geelong, Gee attended a radio school in Melbourne before completing a two-year stint at Colac radio station 3CS in the late 1970's.[1]

Gee started working for the ABC in 1980, covering various sporting events for ABC Sport as well as hosting programs such as Sports Night and the annual ABC Sports Awards.[1]

Gee lists a career highlight as calling the 1500m freestyle event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in which Australian swimmer Kieran Perkins won gold.[1]

After 18 years of covering sport for the ABC, Gee was appointed as chief newsreader for ABC News Tasmania in 1998.[1]

In addition to reading news on ABC Television in Tasmania, Gee also presented afternoon bulletins on ABC Radio Hobart and ABC Northern Tasmania.[2]

In July 2018, Gee announced his retirement.[3] After 20 years of reading the Tasmanian edition of ABC News in Hobart, Gee presented his final news bulletin on 3 August 2018.[4]

Upon his retirement, Gee received tributes from Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman, Geelong coach Chris Scott, SBS cycling commentator Mike Tomalaris, and ABC Grandstand commentator Alister Nicholson.[4] Former ABC news editor Andrew Fisher also said it was Gee's popularity which had helped the Tasmanian news bulletin become the highest rating ABC News bulletin in Australia.[4]

It was announced in September 2018 that Gee's replacement would be former 7.30 Victoria presenter Guy Stayner.[5]

Gee lists cricket commentator Alan McGilvray as an inspiration.[1]

Bicycle Accident[edit]

In November 2017, Gee was injured in a serious bicycle accident.[6] During a steep descent on a road near Hobart, Gee entered a tight corner too fast and was thrown over the handlebars, hitting a group of rocks headfirst. Gee fractured two vertebrae and also suffered shoulder and knee injuries. Gee believes wearing a helmet prevented him from receiving more serious injuries.[7]
