Peter Philippe Weiss (born October 2, 1962 in Basel) is a Swiss composer, sound designer, lecturer, musician and performance artist. He is a pioneer in audio-branding, founding the first sound trademark agency in 1994. Weiss initiated various art projects in performance art, music and film score composition and spatial sound installation. He also acts as guest lecturer in different universities and as keynote speaker at congresses and conferences.
Career[edit]
In 1994 Peter Philippe Weiss founded Corporate Sound AG and established the first agency for audio-branding (sound trademarking). Weiss is a pioneer and wrote the first publication in this field with the title "Corporate Sound – marketing instrument of the future" published by Thexis, University of St. Gallen.[1] In 2009 Corporate Sound AG was awarded with the Red Dot Design Award for audio-branding.[2] Together with Burkhard von and Dallwitz, he wrote the film score for the feature film "Manipulation" starring Klaus-Maria-Brandauer and Sebastian Koch.[3] Since 2013 he has been a member of the Red Dot Design Award jury and in 2020 he became Ambassador of Red Dot Design Award.
Art[edit]
He trained in classical violin and autodidactically learned acoustic and electric guitar, electric bass, drums/percussion, and piano/keyboards. He played these instruments in various bands and musical formations, such as guest musician (key, viol) of the Canadian performance band, The Look People. In 1987 he performed with this band on a Europe tour, at St. Gallen Open-Air, CBGB’s in New York, and the Diamonds in Toronto.
In 2002 he composed and produced the private music edition “zen jazz,” a contemplative jazz lounge CD, with several guest musicians of Switzerland.[4]
In 2005 he conducted an artistic city sound installation in the middle of Basel’s town centre,[5] consisting of 16 different sound sources, and with the power of about 20'000 Watts, incorporating new spaces into the existing sound environment with highly realistic soundscapes. In 2006, he produced an art project called Bodega Sound, in which he displayed an acoustic audio portrait of his favourite restaurant in Basel.
Two years later, on the occasion of the Hörforum of Osnabrück University, he made sound emerge from the sewers of Osnabrück’s market place. One year later this was repeated in Basel’s city center with an installation called "unterwelten" (underworlds).[6][7]
In his main music art project "Der Träumer," he interlinked storytelling, poetry, filmscore and live performance. He has been researching and experimenting on this project for 30 years. Starting in 1992 with "Bistro d’histoires" and followed in 2002 by "Zzzip… …ooOH?!?," a musicomix band, he was touring with friends all over Switzerland. In 2008, Weiss released his first solo show with Mindgames band. Since 2014, he acts under his artist name Der Träumer (the dreamer) and releases solo performances in Switzerland.[8]
