Career[edit]

Rütten's career began in 1988 with his own author's office, "rührei". At the beginning he wrote many sketch contributions for Thomas Freitag and Hanns Dieter Hüsch and was also active for ZAK, the Dirk Bach Show and RTL Samstag Nacht.

Even in his early days, Rütten took on roles in various clips - for example, in an AIDS prevention commercial. In his career he has worked several times with Hella von Sinnen.

In 1995, Rütten became head writer on the RTL Nachtshow with Thomas Koschwitz. In the same year, he also signed on as a writer at the Brainpool company. Here he acted as head writer for The Harald Schmidt Show until 1998 - together with his colleague Ralf Husmann, who later used him as a performer in the ProSieben series Stromberg.

In 1998, at the request of Harald Schmidt, Rütten moved to his production company Bonito TV, which he had founded for the independent production of The Harald Schmidt Show. Peter Rütten was Schmidt's head writer there until 2003. He invented characters such as Bimmel and Bommel, Dr. Udo Brömme and Kai Edel, whereby he impersonated the artificial character Kai Edel himself. Rütten also appeared in other roles, for example as Ludi Fraukewitz, and lent his voice to the show as Off-Speaker.

Even before Schmidt's creative break in 2004, Rütten had decided to go into new territory. At the beginning of 2003, he became head writer for Was guckst du?!. In the same year, he was also the advertising voice of L'TUR and took on a role in the feature film Der letzte Lude. Rütten also appeared alongside Kaya Yanar in an AOL commercial and an AIDS prevention commercial.

After Rütten parted ways with Bonito TV at the end of 2003, he became head writer, producer, performer and voice of Friday Nacht News. From 2004 onwards, Rütten regularly played the role of Mr. Pötsch (under the name Ludwig Pelikan) on Stromberg. In 2005, Rütten developed various television formats - including Die Klinsmännchen, a satire on the German World Cup Team 2006.

Since 11 October 2012, his own satirical programme Rüttens Bullshit Universum has been running on Tele 5.

In the summer of 2013, the format The Worst Films of All Time premiered on the same channel - SchleFaZ, which Rütten hosts together with Oliver Kalkofe. Here, the two present low-quality films and comment on them in a satirical way, describing themselves as "competent tour guides on Trash sightseeing".[1] The Worst Movies of All Time[2] draws heavily on the KTMA series Mystery Science Theater 3000.[3] In the same year, Rütten was hired as an off-screen narrator for the ProSieben clip show Heroes of the Internet, as well as for some Galileo features from 2017.[4] He was also an off-speaker for the late-night show Freshly Roasted Daily.
