History[edit]

The company was founded by British archaeologist and documentary Producer/Director, Peter Sommer in 2002. Originally only offering tours in Turkey led by Sommer, the company has grown to offer a wide range of trips led by archaeologists and historians in Croatia, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Turkey and the UK[3].

The company has won The Tour Operator of the Year Gold or Silver award five times since the awards, given by AITO [4], began in 2016.

Peter Sommer Travels specializes in expert-led land based tours and gulet cruises with a cultural focus. The company offers special interest tours focusing on various themes, such as archaeological tours, gastronomic tours, family tours and walking tours. In 1994 Peter Sommer walked 2,000 miles across Turkey retracing the route of Alexander the Great and also worked on the BBC/PBS documentary series In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great. In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, a trip which Peter leads in Turkey, is considered one of the company’s signature tours[10].
