Phanindra Sama is an Indian Internet-based entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of online bus ticket booking platform Redbus.in. It is the world's largest online bus ticket booking platform operating in India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Peru and Colombia.

Early life

Sama was born on 15 August 1980 at Todapakal village in Nizambad District, Andhra Pradesh. His father died when he was 6 years old. His mother took all the responsibilities of Phanindra and his brother. Phanindra then moved to his uncle's house in Hyderabad for his 10th and +2 studies. He was an extraordinary student in studies. He got 80% marks in SSC and 97% marks in his intermediate. Considering his intermediate marks, he got admission into BITS Pilani in the stream of Electronics Engineering. He is a post graduate from Indian Institute of Science. As a child, he was always fascinated with electronics. The way electrons flow in a wire and make a fan rotate, etc., were very interesting to him.

Career

After his post graduation, he got a job at Texas Instruments, Bengaluru. He was a Sr. Design Engineer there. He co-founded Redbus.in, an online bus ticket booking platform. Redbus.in was acquired by Ibibo for around $100 million in 2013.

Sama has been appointed as chief innovation officer of TSIC (Telangana State Innovation Cell). He is also currently serving as a patron in Kakatiya Sandbox, an experimentation lab for people to work on solutions to problems.

Awards and recognition

  • He was included in Forbes magazine's Top 5 startups 2010.
  • He was awarded "India's best internet startup" in 2010 by IMAI.
  • Entrepreneur of the year award under I.T by ET Now in 2013.
