Philanthro Productions (Philanthro) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Los Angeles, California, United States that is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for charitable organizations.[1][2][3] Philanthro Productions generates income in a manner similar to a production company whereby events are organized for the public to attend;[4] Philanthro has produced and promoted nightclub parties, fashion shows, documentary premiers, and wine and cheese mixers.[5][6] After an event, Philanthro Productions strives to donate 100% of the net profit to a charity.[7][8][9][10] Since its inception in 2007, Philanthro Productions has donated over $300,000 in cash to partner charitable organizations.[11] Founded in 2007, Philanthro has chapters in Los Angeles, New York City, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle. Additionally, Philanthro serves as a fiscal sponsor for VivaLAArt!"

Goals[edit]

Quoted from the Philanthro Productions website:[12]

Goal How to Accomplish this Goal
Raise Funds for Partner Charities By holding first-rate social events in partnership with leading non-profits.
Raise Awareness for Partner Charities By actively engaging patrons in education at events and giving them the opportunity to find out more.
Provide Opportunities for Continued Involvement By organizing volunteer events in collaboration with partner charities.
Create Lifelong Philanthropists By making philanthropy achievable and desirable for this generation through brand and events.
By providing a structured leadership development program through participation in Philanthro Productions.

History[edit]

The concept of Philanthro was brainstormed in November 2006 by Ian Lee and Andrew Geisse, two management consultants. Living in Los Angeles, the duo had watched as thousands of dollars change hands between party-goers and nightclubs. They theorized that a volunteer team could promote and host events but instead of keeping the money for profit, as with professional promoters, the funds could be donated to charity. In this way, people would have the same nightlife experience as usual but this time, their money would be going towards charity. Philanthro Productions was incorporated in California on March 22, 2007 and received 501(c)3 non-profit status from the IRS on September 21, 2007 (retroactive to the date of incorporation, March 22, 2007).[12]

Los Angeles[edit]

The first Philanthro Productions team was established in Los Angeles and hosted Philanthro's first event on June 9, 2007. The event was held at the Spider Club in Hollywood to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Attendance exceeded 350 and Philanthro Productions generated over $4,000 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.[13]

San Diego[edit]

San Diego became the 2nd city with a Philanthro Productions team that was established shortly after Los Angeles'. Its founder, Alisa Le, had independently planned to host a party benefiting a charity. Upon hearing of Philanthro Productions, she decided to form Philanthro Productions' San Diego chapter. Thus, Philanthro's second overall event – the debut of the San Diego chapter – took place on July 19, 2007, in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. Partner charity Invisible Children received a contribution of nearly $6,000 after the event at Belo nightclub drew more than 600 people.[14]

San Francisco[edit]

San Francisco was the third division of Philanthro Productions. Their first event, held on February 6, 2009, took place at Atmosphere. The event drew over 650 people and raised $9,000 for Kiva.[15]

Seattle[edit]

Philanthro Seattle started as an idea late in 2010 when John Taing, current co-president, received an invite to a San Francisco P* event. Disappointed that there wasn't anything similar in Seattle, he began a discussion that snowballed into an official chapter forming in just two months time. With an existing charitable culture and large young professional population, Seattle is ripe for Philanthro to encourage a new generation of philanthropy. Using the lessons and platform built by the existing chapters, P*Seattle is excited and ready to give Seattle's young professionals a way to contribute, have fun and meet others that want to do more for their community and the world around them.[16]

New York[edit]

New York is one of the latest chapters started by Philanthro Productions (Est. 2010). Their kick off event was held on April 29, 2011 at Kiss & Fly, and benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York.[17] There is a saying that "if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere." It has always been Philanthro's dream to have a presence on the east coast, and we believe that there is no better place to start than the Big Apple. In New York, we have found a talented team to help bring the Philanthro mission to a landscape saturated with socially conscious young professionals. We are well aware of the challenges of this unique marketplace, but look forward to taking on that challenge and making our mark.

Corporate[edit]

In March 2009, Philanthro Productions formed a Philanthro Productions Corporate division. The job of this branch of Philanthro was to handle administrative tasks and oversee the entire organization.[12]
