Philip M. Potempa is a journalist[1], published author and media personality who is a contributing food and entertainment newspaper columnist for Chicago Tribune Media.

His signature daily entertainment column about celebrities, theater, television and movies, and his weekly folksy rural musings and recipe column titled "From the Farm," an autobiographical nod to his own family's Indiana agriculture roots, as well as his other feature stories appeared in The Times of Northwest Indiana from 1995 until November 2015. His columns[1] and stories resumed in February 2016 in his new flagship newspaper The Post-Tribune and Chicago Tribune Media.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Potempa was raised in San Pierre, Indiana, on his family's farm by parents Chester and Peggy Potempa. He graduated in 1988 from North Judson-San Pierre High School before receiving his BA in journalism and communication from Valparaiso University.[3]

Career[edit]

In 1992 he began his career working as a bylined contributor with stories and columns in The South Bend Tribune.[4] From 1993 to 1995, he worked as a columnist and feature writer with the daily newspaper in Valparaiso, Ind., The Vidette-Messenger, before the property was acquired by Howard Publishing and The Times of Northwest Indiana in July 1995.[5]

From October 2004 through October 2015, Potempa wrote and published a daily entertainment column highlighting bold-faced names and items of interest for The Times of Northwest Indiana after it was acquired by Lee Enterprises in April 2002,[6] the same month and year Potempa's weekly "From the Farm" column debuted and continues to be published, now via Chicago Tribune media. The "From the Farm" column has inspired four published cookbooks compiling reprints of all of the published folksy farm recipe columns since the feature's launch in April 2002 through November 2015.[7][8] All four book volumes are published by Pediment Press[9] and utilize the same brand approach as the newspaper feature namesake: From the Farm published in 2004, More From the Farm in 2007, Further From the Farm in 2010 and Back From the Farm in 2019. The latter was unveiled at an October 2019 stage cooking show featuring Potempa at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster, Indiana.[10][11]

Potempa collects historical autographs and rare collector artifacts, often associated with the journalism field, such as syndicated newspaper advice columnist Ann Landers' manual typewriter and one of gossip columnist Walter Winchell's personally owned signature fedora hats.[12] In 2008, Potempa wore the fedora that had been owned by Walter Winchell when he was cast by director Michael Mann to play a 1930s newspaper reporter who interviews gangster John Dillinger, played by Johnny Depp, in an onscreen scene in the 2009 Universal Pictures film Public Enemies.[13]
