Philipp Baaske

Philipp Baaske (born 19 April 1979) is a German scientist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of NanoTemper Technologies GmbH, a Munich-based company that develops biophysical instruments for pharmaceutical and life science research. He serves as the company’s Executive Chairman.[1] Baaske is also an active business angel and a member of the advisory board of Terraplasma GmbH.[2]
Early life and education
Baaske was born on 19 April 1979 and grew up in Kirchleus, a village near Kulmbach in northern Bavaria, Germany. He studied physics at the University of Bayreuth, specialising in biophysics and earned a Diplom in Physik in 2005. He received his Dr. rer. nat. in biophysics from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich in 2010, with research focused on optical methods for analysing biomolecular interactions.[3] His doctoral thesis, titled Biomolecules in Microthermal Fields, was published through LMU Munich’s institutional repository.[4]

Entrepreneurs experiences
In 2008, Baaske co-founded NanoTemper Technologies GmbH in Munich as a spin-off from academic research. The company develops and produces biophysical instruments that facilitate the study of molecular interactions, supporting research in drug discovery and development. Under Baaske's leadership, NanoTemper expanded internationally, with offices in Boston, San Francisco[5], Tokyo, and Shanghai[6]. The company has developed technologies such as Microscale Thermophoresis (MST)[7] and nanoDSF.
Awards
In 2014, Baaske and NanoTemper received the German Founders Award (Deutscher Gründerpreis) in the “rising star” category.[8]
NanoTemper was also awarded the German Innovation Prize in 2012.[9]
In 2021, it was named Innovator of the Year in the TOP 100 competition.[10]
Baaske was included in Capital magazine’s Top 40 under 40 in 2015.
Business Angel Activities
Baaske supports early-stage companies in biotechnology, life sciences, and high-tech sectors. His portfolio includes:
- Opto Biolabs GmbH (Freiburg), specialising in optogenetic lighting solutions.
- Doderm GmbH, which develops dermatological products for animals.
- Invitris GmbH (Munich), focused on protein-based therapeutics against antimicrobial resistance.
Political activities
Philipp Baaske serves as a Senator in the Bundeswirtschaftssenat (BVMW), where he contributes to shaping the future of German industry by advocating for the interests of medium-sized enterprises. He is also actively involved with Brand New Bundestag, a political initiative to strengthen the connection between civil society and political institutions. The organisation promotes progressive policies, greater diversity in parliament, and broader representation to ensure that democratic decisions reflect the entire population. Baaske supports efforts to foster innovation and drive systemic change in German politics through his involvement with Brand New Bundestag.[11]
Honorable entrepreneur philosophy
Baaske introduced the concept of the Honorable Entrepreneur, a leadership philosophy based on long-term value creation through trust, responsibility, and innovation. Inspired by Hanseatic principles of Honourable Merchant, the model promotes ethical conduct and sustainable business growth. He introduced the idea in 2024 through essays and public talks.[12]
