Phillip Ahn (born May 15, 1965) is an accomplished Korean-American family physician and lifelong martial artist. He is most well known for his portrayal of Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 2.[1] He wrote "Mortal Doctor"[2] that chronological narrates his life as a doctor and experiences as martial artist.

Life and career[edit]

Ahn was born in Seoul, South Korea.[3]

In 1993, he played the main villain, Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat II game.[4] He was given the choice of either the ninjas (Scorpion, Subzero, Reptile) or Shang Tsung, who would become young to enter the tournament in Mortal Kombat 2. Since Daniel Pesina had already played the ninjas in Mortal Kombat and he did not want to play a character that covered their face, he chose the role of Shang Tsung. [5] In 1995, he and fellow MK actors Daniel Pesina, Katalin Zamiar, and Ho-Sung Pak all appeared in a fighting game produced exclusively for the Atari Jaguar game console titled Thea Realm Fighters, but it was never released after Atari ceased production on the failed system later that year.

Mission Work[edit]

Dr. Ahn is a board certified family physician[6] who has served the needy in the south side of Chicago for his entire medical career.[7] He has also made over 25 medical mission trips to developing countries in Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean. He has served as a medical mission worker in Honduras, Kenya, Republic of Congo, Jamaica, and Haiti.

Taekwondo[edit]

Ahn is a 7th Degree Taekwondo martial artist. He has trained many professional athletes in his career, some of whom became national champions, including Olympic Powerlifter (Jeff Michels 1988, 1992) and Olympic Speed Skater(Nancy Swider Peltz, Jr. 2010). He taught lessons to Chicago Blackhawks hockey players, Troy Murray, Ed Belfour, Stephane Matteau, and Patrick Poulin. NBA coach and general manager Donn Nelson was also a student of Ahn. He also trained the Camille and Kennerly Kitt aka "The Harp Twins". [8]

In the world famous video game, “Mortal Kombat 2,” the character “Shang Tsung” displays kicks and other techniques that are typical for Tae Kwon Do, such as low and high side kicks, middle and high punches and upper cuts, elbows, blocks, turning kicks, jump kicks, jump turning kicks, and flying kicks.[9] He even uses the ready stance/pose for the first dan black belt form “Koryo” in his image for part of his storyline.[10]
