Phone by Google, previously known as Phone, is a free-to-use dialer service app developed by Google, with built-in caller identification. Launched in December 2015, the app has more than a billion downloads on the Play Store.

    History

In December 2015, Google published a dialer service app named "Phone" on the Play Store, available only to pre-installed devices.[1] It was later renamed "Phone by Google" in September 2020.[2][3] The app surpassed 500 million installs in 2020,[4][5] and 1 billion in 2021.[6]

In October 2021, the verified calls feature became available for beta testing users in Germany.[7]

In February 2022, the phone app adopted the Material You design.[8] In September 2022, with the release of beta version 90.0.475844574, a new user interface was rolled out, with a new bottom layout for four key functions (Keypad, Mute, Speaker and More, along with an end-call button on the bottom).[9][10]

    Features

Phone by Google is a free-to-use app, with features restricted based on phone type and geographic location of users. Most features are available in English and to US users. The app is available for all Android devices, with variable availability of features, except Chromebooks and tablets.[11][12][13][14][15]

    • Spam protection
    • Caller identification and blocking
    • Customizable quick responses
    • Call recording
    • Customizable display options
    • Auto-Answer calls
    • Customizable favourites
    • Search and directly call nearby places
    • Call Screening and Verified Calls
    • Visual Voicemail

    Hold for Me

Hold for Me is a feature available in Phone by Google, which can notify the user when a live person is on the other line. It is limited to English and is only available in the USA, Australia, and Canada.[16]

    Controversies and criticism

In February 2022, Trinity College Dublin computer science professor Douglas Leith, in his research paper "What Data Do The Google Dialer and Messages Apps On Android Send to Google?", found the phone app to be collecting some user data and sending it to Google without any consent or notice. The data included call logs, incoming and outgoing calls, along with the time and call duration.[17][18] Google called the findings accurate and resolved them.[19]
