PicWicToys is a French chain of toy stores established in 1977 by Stéphane Mulliez Englos in the department of North. The Picwic brand reappeared in 2019, following its merger with Toys “R” Us France to create PicWicToys. The chain has more than 55 locations across France, with future stores planned.[1]

History[edit]

After noticing that the "market for toys did not exist in France", Stéphane Mulliez launched Picwic in the commercial area of Englos-les-Géants in Englos (Nord, France) in the year 1977. In 1981, the brand opened two stores in the commercial areas of Roncq and Noyelles, only to close them four years later and set up in the main square of Lille. [2]

From 1997, Picwic developed in France by setting up in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois , Vert-Saint-Denis , Beauvais , Livry-Gargan , Rennes , Le Pontet , Amiens , Dunkirk , Valenciennes  . While in 2004, the Pontet store closed, in 2006 and 2008, in Lomme and Barentin opened two stores over 4,000  m 2 [3]

In October 2018, the chain announced their buyout of the French subsidiary of Toys "R" Us. In April of 2019, all stores were converted to PicWicToys. [4]

In 2022, the chain merged with Irish toy giant, Smyths, however, the PicWicToys name was kept. [5]
