Sophie McBurnie (born 1999) is a drum and bass singer, TikToker and OnlyFans creator from north London. She had a No. 99 hit as half of piri & tommy with "on & on".
Early life
piri was born in 1999[1] and grew up in Manchester.[2] Her parents were a retired Asda manager and a human resources manager. She holds a degree in chemistry from Lancaster University. After graduating, she worked part time shifts at Asda.[3] She has stated that she grew up with artists such as the Arctic Monkeys but took inspiration mainly from Disclosure, MJ Cole and PinkPantheress.[4]
2021-2023: piri & tommy
Between 2021 and 2023, piri was one half of piri & tommy, with whom she released four singles ("it's a match",[5], "soft spot"[6], "on & on"[7], "beachin"[8], "words"[9] and "unlock it"[10]); "soft spot", "on & on" and "beachin" formed the first three singles from their EP, froge.mp3,[11] while "unlock it" was a cover of the Charli XCX song of the same name[10] and their second single, "on & on", charted at No. 99 on the UK Singles Chart.[12] She was a co-founder of "Loud LDN", a collective of London-based female and non-binary creatives.[13] In January 2023, piri announced that subsequent releases would be credited under their individual names, rather than the band.[14]
Personal life
McBurnie maintains an OnlyFans account, which was created in response to her being £2,000 in debt when she graduated university, and her Asda shifts not being enough to cover it. She told The Times in November 2022 that her account had "about 1,000 to 2,000 fans paying about $12 a month", which minus fees meant she made "between $10,000 and $20,000 a month", which she was able to use to fund her music career, move to north London and buy a computer and microphone. At the time of that article, she had over 419,000 followers on TikTok;[3] she told 1883magazine in September 2021 that she had had her account banned three times due to "the banning issue; TikToks are constantly taken down despite them completely adhering to the community guidelines and users are being banned if this happens to them multiple times".[2] She had previously been in a relationship with Tommy Villiers, the other half of piri & tommy,[15] who she met after seeing his other band, Porij, on Twitter, and finding the band on Instagram;[6] their breakup was reported in January 2023.[15] In her own time, she practices pole fitness, which she started at the pole fitness society at Lancaster University,[2] and which she occasionally integrates into her act.[16]
