Pivotal Commware is a privately held company based in Kirkland, Washington that provides holographic beamforming products using metamaterial technology and novel physics.

History[edit]

Pivotal Commware was founded in 2016 as a start-up within Intellectual Ventures, an American private-equity firm that develops and licenses intellectual property.[1] In June 2017, Pivotal Commware was spun out from Intellectual Ventures and the company closed a series A funding round for $17 million with lead investments from The Thermo Companies and DIG Investment, and additional investment from Bill Gates, Lux Capital, and the family office of Barry Sternlicht.[2][3]

In June 2020, Pivotal began testing its 5G mmWave network repeaters in Michigan with a carrier.[4][5] Pivotal Commware is a member of the Open RAN Policy Coalition,[6] and the O-RAN Alliance. In September 2020, Pivotal Commware filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to conduct tests of its holographic beamforming antenna technology in the 3.5 GHz Citizens Broadband Radio Services (CBRS) band to address power limitations of CBRS.[7][8]

In February 2021, Pivotal Commware closed a series C funding round led by an affiliate of Tracker Capital Management, LLC.[9] Other investors included Devonshire Investors and Pivotal’s existing investors including DIG Investment, Thermo, Lux Capital and Bill Gates.[10][11]
