Diginet GmbH & Co. KG is a German company headquartered in Cologne that operates the online photo service Pixum[3] and artboxONE.[4] Pixum was founded in 2000 and is considered a pioneer of online photo printing and one of the first online photo services in Germany.[5][6] In 2026, the company had more than 170 employees.[2]
History
The company was founded in 2000 in Cologne by Daniel Attallah, Christian Marsch, and Michael Ziegert.[7] The company grew rapidly in its first year and took over the Swiss photo service eBaraza.[7] In 2001, Diginet expanded to the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Austria and launched an English-language website. The following year, the company introduced photo uploads via mobile phone and acquired the Dutch photo service Colorwonder.[7] In 2004 and 2005, the service expanded to include, among others, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Scandinavia. By 2006, the service had over one million registered users.[7] Since 2008, the company, originally established as Pixum AG, has been operating under the name Diginet GmbH & Co. KG; Pixum has since continued as its brand.[8]
Over time, Pixum developed from a startup into an established provider of online photo services in the European market.[1] In an interview in 2026, founder Attallah stated that the company had grown every year since its founding; official revenue figures are not published.[9] At the end of July 2026, Attallah stepped down from the company's management after more than 25 years and withdrew from the operational business. Thomas Alscheid was appointed the new CEO; he was a member of Diginet's executive management team from 2008 to 2019 and subsequently served as Co-CEO of the photo lab WhiteWall.[1][5][2]
Operations
Under the Pixum brand, the company sells photo products designed by the customers themselves, including photo books, wall art, photo calendars, greeting cards, photo puzzles, and photo games.[6] The service also offers prints of digital photos.[5][2] The company operates in several European countries.[2] The photo books are offered with hardcover or softcover binding or as stapled booklets in several different formats.[10]
The company's offering also includes the Pixum mobile app, which is used to design and order photo products.[11] The app is free of charge for iOS and Android and allows photo books to be designed either manually or with automatically generated layouts. Images can be imported from cloud services such as Google Photos, OneDrive and Dropbox, and photo books can also be designed without an internet connection.[12] In addition to the app, photo products can also be designed in a web browser or using a downloadable program.[10]
Instead of personal photos, artboxONE features images by photographers and artists on a range of products also available from Pixum.[13]
