Plyverse (Hangul플리버스) is the fictional setting of the South Korean web series Love Playlist. Plyverse is a portmanteau of the words Playlist and Universe. The term is used to link characters seen across secondary contents, such as collaborations and spin-offs, by organically connecting and integrating each work based on a common worldview.[1] On July 6, 2021, Playlist released the official poster, profiles and photos of characters who have appeared in the Playlist work such as Shin Ye-eun, Hwang Min-hyun, Hwang In-yeop, Ahn Hee-yeon, and Yeri, as well as maps showing major places in the work such as Seoyeon High School, Seoyeon University, Revan Company and re.feel.[2]

Development[edit]

Map with list of fictional places in Plyverse.

In 2019, CEO Park Tae-won addressed that "forming a worldview in the content business is of paramount importance. The worldview makes viewers go beyond simply consuming works as a unit, but consume them in a connected context. People tend to be more enthusiastic about familiar and easily accessible things than unfamiliar things. In contrast to realizing it, we are real content. It can be seen that the worldview expands whenever a work is added." In addition, Plyverse is used as a common space, forming a relationship between characters in different works and providing the fun of discovering Easter eggs (messages or information hidden by users throughout the product).[3]

Plyverse was introduced through Ply Friends. The first story is located at Seoyeon University and Revan Company, played by four characters from Love Playlist and Flower Ever After, released on July 10, 2021. The second story is located at Re.feel Café and Ryeogo University, played by five characters from A-Teen, In Seoul, Love Playlist, and My Fuxxxxx Romance, released on October 18, 2021. It is an ambitious plan of the playlist to draw 'reality beyond reality'.[4]

Kang Myung-hee, Head of Marketing for Playlist, said, "By introducing the concept of 'Plyverse', we decided to help viewers understand it and apply it to new works in the future. In addition to Seoyeon High School and Seoyeon University, nearby schools such as Yeonri High School and Yeonri University have also been set up, as well as a bus terminal. We are trying to increase the viewer's immersion by building a dense worldview into a place that is likely to exist in reality."[5]
