Le'Serone S. Smith (born February 8, 1988), professionally known as Poetic Lace, is an American Christian Hip Hop artist, filmmaker, and Man of God.[2] Smith began his artistic career with the release of his first album, When Silence Falls in 2012. The album gained local success by charting as high as no. 7 on Modern Beat's Hit Talk Top 20 chart.[3] Smith gained national attention with his 2017 release, King Of The City, in which its lead music video debuted on BET Soul[4], and earned nominations for Independent Music Video of The Year at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards[5] and Best Hip Hop Video at The Eddy Awards.[6] Smith’s follow up 2019 release, Out With The Old, reached no. 29 on the iTunes charts in Bulgaria[7] and earned him the 2019 Best of Jacksonville Award.[8]

Early life

Le'Serone S. Smith was born on February 8, 1988 in Compton, California to Monika Clary (Logan) and Trennis Smith Woodman (Pretty P.T). His mother, a playwright, and his father, the nephew of the late Johnny "Guitar" Watson, was a young rap artist and producer who toured with Watson until his murder in 1991.[9] After the death of his father, Smith, his mother and brother moved to Jacksonville, Florida to live with his adopted grandparents, Ann and Andrew Logan.[10]

Career

Music

In 2012, Poetic Lace released his first studio album, When Silence Falls. This album charted him at no. 10 on Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes' Volume 145 Top 50 Indie Artist[11], no. 14 as an artist[12] and no. 7 as a producer[13] on Modern Beats' Hit Talk Top 20, and landing him the radio personality position for The Covenant Cafe on the D-Hour Show Network; interviewing Gospel Music celebrities such as J Moss[14], John P. Kee[15], Shirley Murdock[16], and more. Poetic Lace was then selected to be in part of A Great Day in Lavilla, a historic photo honoring Jacksonville, Florida's notable singers, poets, rappers, musicians, and activists.[17] The photo was hung up in the legendary Ritz Theatre (Jacksonville).

In 2013, Poetic Lace was named the OMN Champion In Jacksonville, Florida, which landed him a spot to perform during the God Belongs in My City tour.[18] Following the tour, Poetic Lace released his single Soul Therapy featuring Transparent and Worshippers Victorious. Soul Therapy debuted nationwide on Shine TV (New Zealand), peaked at no. 3 on Jamsterdam's Top 10[19] (becoming the first Gospel artist to chart on the station for 8 consecutive weeks)[20], landed him a spot on the 5th Annual Rhythm of Gospel Awards stage, and earned him a nomination for Holy Hip Hop Artist of The Year at Prayze Factor's People's Choice Awards.[21] Soul Therapy also remained on The CW 17's Music 4 U Hot List Top 5 in Jacksonville, Florida for 22 consecutive weeks.[22]

In 2015 Poetic Lace released his third single Unconcealed featuring Nova. Unconcealed peaked at no. 1 on Jamsterdam's Top 10[20], no. 1 on the CW17 Music 4 U Top 5 Hot List, and no. 2 on CHHTV Christian Hip Hop - Top Certified Chart on Roku.[23]In 2016 Poetic Lace released his fourth single Man Down. Man Down peaked at no. 2 on CHHTV Christian Hip Hop - Top 50 Certified Chart, featured in Boss Code magazine, and led Poetic Lace to winning the Creative Artist of the Year Award at the 2nd Annual Extraordinary People's Awards.[24]

In 2017, Poetic Lace released his second studio album titled King Of The City. The album's lead music video debuted on BET Soul, and earned nominations for Independent Music Video of The Year at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards and Best Hip Hop Video at The Eddy Awards. King Of The City, in 2019 Poetic Lace released his third studio album titled Out With The Old. This album charted at no. 29 in Bulgaria on the iTunes charts and led Poetic Lace to winning the 2019 Best of Jacksonville Award in the category of musician.

Film

In 2013, Poetic Lace became a filmmaker by partnering with Christian Hip Hop's established music video director, Will Thomas of Space Cherry Films. Poetic Lace worked behind scenes editing and shooting videos for Will Thomas[25] on artist projects such as Flame (rapper), KB (rapper), V. Rose, Uncle Reece, and more.

In 2016, Poetic Lace won the Wedding Music Video Of the Year Award for directing and producing Dwayne Coley's This Wedding Day at the 2nd Annual Extraordinary People's Awards.[26] In 2017, 2018, and 2019 Poetic Lace was nominated for Independent Music Video of The Year at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards and Best Hip Hop Video at The Eddy Awards for directing and producing videos such as his music video for King Of The City.[5][6]
